7+ Taskbar Tweaker

7+ Taskbar Tweaker
7+ Taskbar Tweaker allows you to configure various aspects of the Windows taskbar.
Most of the configuration options it provides can’t be tweaked using the taskbar properties or the registry.
The tweaker is designed for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

Windows 11 Support Status

  • 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn’t support the Windows 11 taskbar, and probably never will. See this blog post for more details.
  • Some of the tweaks are available in Windows 11 as Windhawk mods. See here for the list of mods, and vote for missing mods that you’d like to see implemented. Read more about Windhawk here.
  • 7+ Taskbar Tweaker works on Windows 11 with the old taskbar which can be restored with third party tools. See this blog post for more details.

FAQ

Q: Which registry keys does 7+ Taskbar Tweaker modify? I don’t need extra processes in my system.
A: The only registry keys the tweaker modifies are its own settings. There are no registry keys for the options it provides. The tweaker does that by injecting a DLL to explorer, hooking/subclassing/some other methods of the dark side.
As for extra processes, the tweaker is a native program, and is very lightweight. It shouldn’t slow down your system, and uses an extremely small amount of memory. Also, you can hide the tray icon if you want.

In case you want to remove the tweaker’s settings from the registry, look for them here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\7 Taskbar Tweaker
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (“7 Taskbar Tweaker” value)

P.S. if you’re a programmer, you might want to take a look at the 7+ Taskbar Tweaking Library.

Q: My antivirus complains about 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.
A: It’s a false positive. I guarantee that the tweaker binaries (and any other files on this site, unless specifically noted) are 100% clean.
Also remember that the tweaker injects into explorer and modifies its memory, which is indeed suspicious.

Q: Can I Group/Combine/Label only some of the items on the taskbar?
A: Yes, use Taskbar Inspector.

Q: May I use 7+ Taskbar Tweaker in a commercial environment?
A: Yes, feel free to use it wherever you want.

Q: Where is the portable version?
A: When installing the tweaker, choose the Portable type of install, as shown on the image below.
The portable version will be extracted to the selected folder.

Selecting the portable installation type

Note: If the tweaker is already installed on your computer, the option won’t be visible. You can launch the setup with the /portable command line switch to force a portable installation.

Q: I want to report a bug/suggest a feature! What is the best way to do it?
A: Post it on the UserEcho page.

Q: I want to translate 7+ Taskbar Tweaker to my language.
A: The archive below contains the files needed to be translated.
Please read readme.txt before proceeding.

  1. zakius says:

Hello, are you working on update to support 1903?

    • Hi,

No, not yet. Is there an insider build which breaks compatibility with 7+ Taskbar Tweaker? Last time I tried, the tweaker was compatible with the latest insider build.

      • zakius says:

to be honest I don’t know, haven’t been really using insider builds this time, all I am aware of is there are major changes in undocumented kernel features that can lead even to BSOD, though that mostly affects anticheat software

I asked mostly because since I first installed 7+TT it always broke on windows upgrade

      • SWatB.com says:

Are there any alternative programs from other developers?

      • Dagni says:

I have just installed 1903 and tweaker v5.6.2 seems to work fine. It just warns about the unsupported build. There’s an option for not warning about incompatibilities in the future, I wish this option would be valid for this version only.
I tried the beta version afterwards. It warns about the beta code but it also works well. Unfortunately I cannot donate because Paypal doesn’t operate in my country. I wish I could…

  2. LexCee says:

    Mr.Ram,

My system is ‘Win7 64bit on a Dell Inspiron 660 Tower.’
Am using ‘7+TaskbarTweaker’ v5.6.2 using mostly standard setups. Have been having issues with this version of at irregular intervals having issues with starting of my web browser (Mozilla FireFox latest versions) not starting within rite clicking upon the icon and selecting their ‘New private Window’ nothing happens, not all of the time. I use the “Hibernate” feature most often, then again, some times even using the ‘Shut down’ gives issues such as this.

    • Why do you think that it’s caused by 7+ Taskbar Tweaker? Have you tried using your computer without the tweaker running? Is the issue gone when the tweaker is not running? If so, please try to turn off your options one by one and try to find out which option causes the issue.

      • LexCee says:

        Mr.Ram,

I am not a programmer nor trained user for in-depth work, self-taught as I have been using Computers for a rather lengthy time, about 1974 on a Data General 64bit Main Frame 19″ cabinet type used for troubleshooting printed circuit boars for DOD. Before there were monitors and keyboards using an old TTY for input and output. Just needed a suggestion of where to start for troubleshooting.

With your Expertise in creating this software is the very BEST place to start asking questions. I thank you for this, have been using since about the time you first created “7 + Task Tweaker” cannot remember exactly when. This IS the very BEST for keeping a clean clear TASK BAR as we wish, a very large THANK YOU for this.

At this time my main concern is SURVIVAL and will make a donation when it gets better, I am retired with a ‘fixed income’ from DOD (Department of Defense) and with the last administration we had attempting to destroy our country of U.S.A. it has been difficult, slowly they are doing some improvements.

    • Jed says:

Is it about lags that force you to restart your device?
I have the same issues recently. My PC worked fine for a week once I turned off 7+. 30 minutes with 7+ running and I already got massive lags that forced me to restart the system.

Any idea how to fix it?
Or how can I revert back to the previous version of 7+TaskbarTweaker?

      • Unfortunately the information you provided is not enough for me to be able to help or understand what the issue can be.

See my reply to LexCee above. You can also try looking at Task Manager when your PC lags, and try to find out which process takes a large amount of resources. Perhaps that will give a clue on what’s going on.

I doubt that downgrading will help, but you can get previous versions of the tweaker here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mcbychsh0xc1dvu/8-Lj2sg3NP

    Hi,

Thanks a lot for this feature, i’m using it everyday and I love it !

  4. LexCee says:

    Mr.Ram,
If I may also post here, ‘have been using your software ‘7 + Task Tweaker’ for over 15 years along with “UnChecky” & am very pleased with it and the performance. WORKS GREAT with little issues, if there are any they are corrected very quickly. THANK YOU ! ! !

  6. WINMOD says:

    Hello.

Why is VirusTotal flagging this with 9 bloody viruses?

    https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/2c51f3e15b6754ad567bb351822fa4fd70c974cbb2c8eefcce61157c099bc678/analysis/1551485507/

Never seen anything like that in my whole life, but checking programs like AeroGlass has 0 flags.

Can we see the source code for this program? Cant you just take all this malware out and sell the program instead? Noway this is legit.

  7. Josh says:

    Hi RaMMicHaeL,

Just letting you know there’s a new build (1903/18362.53) on the Release Preview insider branch for Windows 10, so I imagine 1903 will be released fairly soon as a result.

When running 5.6.2.2 on 1903, the Tweaker initially hooks into the taskbar (after unsupported build warning, after acceptance the seconds become visible on the clock briefly) and then crashes nearly immediately after.

Let me know if I can assist you with making it compatible with 1903 (providing Windows dlls/exes, stacktraces, poking memory, trying bleeding edge builds etc).

Many thanks for your efforts in making and supporting this tool!

    • Hi Josh,

I tried 18362.30 (haven’t found 18362.53), and looks like it loads and most options work. Can you check whether the twekaer loads properly with all of the options off? (you can use a portable version to keep your settings)
If it loads, can you try to find out which option causes explorer to crash?

      • IanM says:

        I’ve just installed Windows 10 v1903 Preview (Build 18362.53) running 7+ Taskbar Tweaker v 5.6.2.

Just to let you know that the ‘large Icons’ and ‘remove extra gap between Taskbar pinned items’ (these are the only options I use) functions are working OK after flagging ‘Windows Insider Version.

    • Hi again,

I started working on it. For now, it seems like the tweaker is mostly compatible with Windows 10 version 1903, except for the following options:
“Hide the Start button”, and the advanced options virtual_desktop_order_fix and disable_tray_icons_drag.

virtual_desktop_order_fix is more probable to cause a crash, so if you have it enabled, you can disable it for now until a new version of 7+ Taskbar Tweaker is available.

  8. Noel says:

I just wanted to let you know that I am getting a “Could not load library (5)” error on Win 10 18875. If I can provide any other useful information let me know.

  9. Marc says:

I’m running final 1903 and 7++ asks me if I want to run it. For now it looks good

    • Marc says:

I have to say, it doesn’t work.
I can do everything and it looks good, but I have some hard crashes when running 7++.
Also my Firefox hangs when I open my old session.
It opens 6 or 7 windows and one of them hangs, I can kill FF, but one process remains and cannot be killed. The process even survives a logoff/logon. Very strange.
I have to reboot but FF will not start. With a new session I have the same problem when I open more windows.
Windows 1903 is running rock solid without 7++ :(.
      I’m waiting for an update.

Btw. I disabled the warning about an unsupported version of windows. How can I enable that warning again?

      • Marc says:

Also without 7tt, FF crashes. It looks more like a Windows Problem to me. 🙁

        • Makes sense that the Firefox issue is not related to 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.

Btw. I disabled the warning about an unsupported version of windows. How can I enable that warning again?

You can remove the nounsupportedwarning value in the registry at:
          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\7 Taskbar Tweaker

Note that the message will appear for a new Windows 10 update regardless.

  10. Sam says:

Hey! I’m on Win 10 17134.706, and I’ve been getting a “Could not load library (107)” error since I updated. Anything I can do about this?
    Great tool, cheers.

  11. Tomas says:

How can I move a windows to a next or previous row of windows in the task bar? Can it be done?

  12. Augustin says:

I have installed the program in Windows 10 but it does not group multi instance of the same application. What should I do?

  13. slip says:

can not close the taskbar button for TT without losing the combine and hover feature. minimizing doesnt work either as have to close the program…. please advise

    • Just closing the window should’t deactivate the features/tweaks – the tweaker should remain in the notification (tray) area. Make sure you’re closing the window, and not exiting via the tray icon menu.

  14. Hal says:

Hi, just wanted to check in about whether or not there’s an update coming. I just updated Windows and now Taskbar Tweaker doesn’t work anymore (I assume for that reason)– hoping there’ll be an update soon.

    Great app, thanks for it!

  15. Abdullah says:

Hey. 1st of all. Thanks for such a nice tool.
In my pc it works great. but on VPS. I’m facing some issue. I can’t restart the VPS. How can I remove the injected dll? without restarting?

  16. Mike says:

Can i extend my Win7 Taskbar to multiple monitors with your software?

    • No, 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn’t provide such an option. There are other third party programs that do that by implementing a secondary taskbar, but 7+ Taskbar Tweaker isn’t able to customize those secondary taskbars.

  17. Charles says:

    Hi,

Just upgraded to windows 10 1809 17763.475. In this windows version, if I run both firefox and chrome, and move some of the chrome windows to another virtual desktop, switching from that desktop to desktop 0 (where firefox and chrome is visible), will put chrome before firefox. Even if I drag the firefox windows before chrome, the order is always reset again when switching desktop.

This does not happen when switching from another virtual desktop where there is no chrome window in it.

    • Hi Charles,

I couldn’t reproduce it in 17763.437. Do you think it specific to 17763.475? Is it about Firefox or Chrome, or are both required for the issue to happen? Does it work properly for all other apps? Asking just in case: you have the virtual_desktop_order_fix advanced option enabled, right?

      • Charles says:

        Hi,

I don’t know if it is specific to 17763.475, I was using 1803 just before upgrading to 1809 and never encountered this kind of behavior before.

        I have virtual_desktop_order_fix enabled.

Chrome and firefox are basically the only multi window app that I use so I cannot comment on other application.

Here are the steps I do to produce this behavior
        (1) desktop 0: run firefox, open several windows
        (2) desktop 0: run chrome, open several windows, now the chrome windows position are after the firefox windows
        (3) desktop 0: move some chrome windows to desktop 2
        (4) switch to desktop 1 where there is no chrome or firefox window, then switch to desktop 0: the taskbar order is correct
        (5) switch to desktop 2 where there is some chrome windows, then switch to desktop 0: now the chrome windows are positioned before the firefox windows

        • Charles says:

I just tried to disable virtual_desktop_order_fix and actually have the same result with the option enabled. Maybe the option is not compatible with this windows version?

        • Chrome and firefox are basically the only multi window app that I use

You can use many other built in apps such as Notepad, Wordpad, Explorer, mspaint, etc.

I tried your steps on build 17763.475, but couldn’t reproduce the issue. Can you perhaps upload a video recording? Maybe I misunderstood one of the steps.

You can verify that the virtual_desktop_order_fix option has an effect with a much simpler test like in the video here.

    • Hi,

It’s been a while, but I finally looked at it and introduced several improvements in v5.8.0.6 beta. Please try it and let me know whether it fixes some or all of the issues with the virtual_desktop_order_fix advanced option for you.

      • Charles says:

        Hi RaMMicHaeL,

Thank you for your effort. It seems to work now that I can drag unpinned windows between pinned windows and it will retain its position after switching virtual desktops. Awesome!

  18. Ekaterina says:

    Good day,
I would like to enquire about software “7+ Taskbar Tweaker”. We are going to use the SW in commercial purpose. Please let me know where I can read Licensing agreement for using 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.

Thank you in advance and looking forward to your reply.

    • Hi Ekaterina,

I don’t have a licensing agreement for 7+ Taskbar Tweaker. All I can say that it’s a free/donationware program, and you can freely use it for commercial purposes. Let me know if there’s anything else I can do.

  19. Charles says:

    Hi,

I have just restarted Windows and still experience the problem, but I have narrowed it a bit. Actually I have two chrome running with different profiles. It seems after switching desktop, the 2nd chrome is sticking to the first chrome.

    Here is an example layout

    Desktop 0: A|FFFFFF|BBBBB
    Desktop 1: A|B

A is chrome window with profile 1
    F is firefox window
B is chrome window using profile 2

A & B have different AppID, but same chrome executable running as different processes.

If I switch between to desktop 1 and open a new chrome window (new B) and then switch to desktop 0, then the layout will become

    Desktop 0: A|BBBBB|FFFFFF
    Desktop 1: A|BB

Note that the layout change when I open a new window.

I don’t seems to experience the problem if I only run a single instance of chrome.

Do you by any change store the taskbar order using the process exe path rather than the appid?

    • Charles says:

Sorry, was replying to the above thread, but forget to fill the name & email fields. Resubmitted the form but it does not appears as a reply.

    • Hi Charles,

I looked it, and was able to reproduce it. Unfortunately, understanding why it doesn’t work properly will require more investigation than I hoped to invest. So for now it will remain a mystery. I might get back to it one rainy day in the future.

Do you by any change store the taskbar order using the process exe path rather than the appid?

No. The virtual_desktop_order_fix option is conceptually quite simple. Explorer maintains an array of all “tasks”, every task can either be shown or not be shown on the current virtual desktop. When a new task is added (e.g. you launch a program), its value is added to the end of the array. The order within the array never changes by explorer.

When a virtual desktop changes, explorer goes over the array and shows/hides every task according to the virtual desktop it belongs to, etc.

The virtual_desktop_order_fix option tries to change the order of this array according to the reordering actions on the taskbar. That way, explorer iterates over the array in the expected order, and the order is maintained between virtual desktop switches.

For some reason, it doesn’t work properly with the case of multiple Chrome profiles. I’ve checked, and the array is being properly reordered, so it must be something else.

      • Charles says:

        Hi,

Thanks for looking into it. You said that new item are added to the end of the list, but how about grouped items?

Also how do I inspect the task list? Is it exposed from the COM interface or should I hook into any explorer method?

        • but how about grouped items?

The array has no notion of groups. Several tasks in the array can be part of the same group.

Also how do I inspect the task list?

I’m not sure about a COM interface. If you’re into researching this, you can look at the CApplicationViewManager::GetViews function which can be found in twinui.pcshell.dll. The function iterates over the array, so you can get its address by debugging it.

  20. SC says:

    Hi,
    many thanks for your software!

    Feature request:
It would be great to add under “other taskbar options – mouse wheel” the option:
[ ] Scroll the taskbar on empty space

Background: If there are many taskbar buttons, the taskbar shows a scrollbar. Unfornately to scroll it’s very annoying everytime to point and click directry to this thin scrollbar to show the needed buttons.
Especially useful with a vertical task bar on wide screens.

I would be glad about a short comment, thx! Steffen

    • Hi Steffen,

What if I’ll allow to limit the multipage_wheel_scroll option to the empty space? I think that it will be easier to implement.

      • SC says:

        Hi Michael,

        the “multipage_wheel_scroll” option without the
“Cycle between taskbar buttons” actually does what I want!

Very thanks for your great and quick support! 🙂

        Best regards, Steffen

  21. Janus says:

Hello, the first thing I want to do is thank you for a wonderful piece of software.

I use it in combination with Classic/Open shell on a win7 machine to duplicate as much as possible the Win2k/XP desktop UI.
The garbage they forced on users while removing one that just worked is unusable to me, and why I had put off moving to Win7 until last year.

I recently had to a complete reinstall after VS2017 trashed my setup.
I updated both Open/Classic shell and 7+taskbar tweaker to the latest, something I had been putting off, but the reinstall made relevant.
I have removed all pinned programs, and disabled the pin extension.
I also recreated the quicklaunch after setting all themes/options to classic, as Win2K like as I can get.

Now I am having a problem I have not seen before, and was not present before.
When I close a program or minimize one, nothing gets focus.
It doesn’t do this all the time, but it is frequent.
The minimized icon stays depressed, or the closed one is gone, yet nothing takes input until I click on another running program, or the desktop.

I am unsure where to even start looking.
Could this be a conflict between Open/Classic shell, and 7+ taskbar tweaker?

    Janus.

  22. Charles says:

    Hi,

With the recently released May 2019 update, enabling virtual_desktop_order_fix causes explorer to crash. Other functionalities seem to be working.

    • Hi Charles,

Are you using the beta version with the experimental support code? The non-beta version doesn’t support the May 2019 update, so several options, including the virtual_desktop_order_fix option, don’t work.

  23. Onur Er says:

    Hi.

Latest version: v5.6.2 and Latest beta version: v5.6.2.3 are both crashing on Windows 10 – 1809.

This is my first time trying to use 7+ on a Win 10. I always used it on Win 7 but this time, my company forces me to use Win 10 and I can’t use 7+ because it’s crashing 🙁

The exact problem goes like this:
    1) I start 7+,
    2) Its icon appears in system tray.
    3) As soon as I mouse over its system tray icon, it disappears.

    Any idea why?

    • Hi Onur,

As soon as I mouse over its system tray icon, it disappears.

Sounds like the process is being killed. Perhaps your antivirus kills the tweaker for some reason. Please try disabling your antivirus temporarily, or adding the tweaker to the antivirus’ whitelist, and see if that helps.

You can also try the tips that I commented here.

      • Onur Er says:

The IT admin manages the antivirus software on this computer. I can’t see any settings button in it but it has a display for blocked threads. The list is empty. 7+ doesn’t look like being blocked by the antivirus.

  24. I just found out about 7+ Tweaker Taskbar
and very helpful in my work if it can be applied
does this method work on Windows 10

  25. Moisés Freire says:

It works just fine. 18362.116 installed.
    v5.6.2

  26. Rob says:

Seems to work fine on 1903. It did complain on first run, which I ignored. However, I haven’t had a crash or experienced any weird behavior thus far. Certainly not like with previous outdated versions.

  27. Lucas says:

Hey man! Nice software. Is there a way to make “show desktop” button to show only the desktop on the current monitor? I’m using two monitors and I don’t want to minimize windows opened on the second monitor. Thanks!

  28. ajoshi says:

    Hi,
I am using 5.6.2.3 (Beta). I installed Windows Home,
Build 18362.19h1_release 190318-1202 and 7TT is working just fine, after clicking “proceed”, post the warning screen. Thanks!

  29. Gabriel says:

Hi, I’m getting “can’t load library (1002)”, and although I add it to exclusion in Trend Micro antivirus, it doesn’t work.
May be due to blacklists loaded by antivirus from corporate network that overwrite my settings, but is there a way to overcome this problem?

I like 7+ taskbar tweaker so much!

    • Hi Gabriel,

You can try the tips that I mentioned here. You can also try contacting your network administrator or Trend Micro, perhaps they’ll be able to help you.

      • Gabriel says:

Michael, thank you! I’ve followed the link, and could manage to resolve it by adding 7+ Taskbar Tweaker executable and inject.dll to exclusion list on Trend Micro antivirus (both in Behavior Monitoring and on Trusted Programs)

  30. Cristian says:

Does anyone know any application similar to this to work with the Windows 10 taskbar?

  31. Julien says:

Hi, I have made a donation in 2016 but when I request the code with my PayPal email I have this : Seems like you didn’t make a donation.
    Can you please help?
    Thank you 🙂

Hi, I use 7+TT for moving buttons of same application to different positions, BIG plus there, and also to add seconds to the systray clock, which is really helpful.
I used to be able to run it on work laptop but recently my employer installed Cylance and set up a rule to block injections (understandably so). Now I cannot use 7+TT on work laptop and miss it.
Is there any possibility 7+TT could do these things without injection? I’m sure the answer is “no”, but had to ask.
Keep up the good work. Awesome little tool.

Thank you so much for the new beta version 5.6.2.4, it’s awesome !
And a big THANK YOU for your fantastic app and the effort you put in maintaining it and making it compatible with the always changing windows updates…

Hey man!!! Thanks for much for figuring out icon padding in the latest beta 5.6.2.4 😀

Ive been waiting for that feature 4 EVA!!!! Damn Microsoft and their tablet UIs XD

Slight issue tho, it hides my network icon if I set padding to “1”. Then if I go to toggle the Network tray icon in Settings, the right-most icon disappears if I toggle it off, and reappears if I toggle it back on. 🙁

Had to revert back to 5.6.2 🙁

Let me know if there’s a way I can make logs for you, would love to help 🙂

    • Hi Jay,
I’m aware of the issue, it will be fixed in the next version. Funny thing is, the issue happens only for odd numbers. Try using the value “2”, it should work.

      • Jay says:

        Whoa :O Nice find!!! 😀

        Back on the beta 😉

I remember I messaged you like 2 years ago on this issue and you told me they had changed the way they display tray icons -_-

I’ve been angry at Microsoft ever since XD

Seriously…. I can’t live without Startisback and 7+ Taskbar Tweaker, every time I have to format or install Windows in a VM, I’m reminded just how awful things have become XD

I was a Donor for the Win8.1 and some Win10 funding thing, and you know what… This update deserves another one, I’m up on the Donation Wall 😀

Thank you for this amazing software.
Just a small question. Is it not possible to select both ‘The taskbar’ and ‘The notification area’ checkboxes in the Other taskbar options? They work like radio buttons.

  36. anna says:

antivirus will directly remove the updated version, and windows will refuse to install it

    • That’s probably a false positive detection. False positives are unfortunately common for new versions of 7+ Taskbar Tweaker which are not yet popular enough. Please see the FAQ above and this blog post.

      • anna says:

IT’s just annoying I cannot use the most recent version. Thankfully I still had the installer for the previous version in my HD, so I can still use that. And as this problem comes up with any new version, you start the whole reporting of a false positive over and over again, without symantec being very cooperative

  37. Anixx says:

    Hello!

The Win10 tray padding option is great! Don’t you consider adding more hidden options to the main dialog?

Also, is it possible to make Win10 taskbar to use standard controls, like in Win 8.1 so that the taskbar would be themed like any other window, and particularly had 3D task buttons?

    • Hi!

Don’t you consider adding more hidden options to the main dialog?

No, not for the time being.

Also, is it possible to make Win10 taskbar to use standard controls

I’m not sure what you mean by “standard controls”. The architecture of the taskbar is very similar in all Windows versions since Windows 7, and it doesn’t use native Windows controls, if that’s what you meant – the taskbar is being drawn manually.

About themes and the 3D look, I’m not familiar with a way to achieve it in Windows 10 without modifying the explorer internals.

    • Hi,

I don’t speak Chinese, but I used Google Translate and I understand the issue. Unfortunately, I can’t think of an explanation or a fix. From what I understand, if the tweaker runs automatically with Windows, the width is not restored, but if you run it manually, it does. There shouldn’t be a difference between the two ways of launching the tweaker, so there’s probably something else involved. If you think that you have any other relevant information, let me know.

  43. Charles says:

Regarding virtual_desktop_order_fix in Windows 10 1903, it works if window grouping is disabled.

    • Does it crash for you if grouping is not disabled? Are you using version 5.7 or newer of the tweaker? I wasn’t able to reproduce the crash.

      • Charles says:

It did not crash, just not working. I am using the 5.7 version. Also disabling grouping only works for the current virtual desktop, the existing windows on the other desktops are still grouped. Only when I open a new window, it is not being grouped. So the other desktop is in a mixed state of grouped/ungrouped windows.

        • just not working

Does it not work with simple cases such as with Notepad like in the video here? I remember that we discussed issues with Chrome, just making sure it’s not about that.

disabling grouping only works for the current virtual desktop

I’m familiar with that limitation. Several options, such as grouping, don’t apply for windows in other virtual desktops. One workaround is to switch to the other virtual desktop(s) and re-apply the relevant option again.

          • Charles says:

From my test, the taskbar order is not preserved only on grouped windows that exists in two or more virtual desktops. For example, I opened several chrome windows and several firefox windows, and split these windows into two virtual desktops. Switching between these virtual desktops will reset the taskbar order.

In other case, moving ungrouped (only a single) window, and moving grouped windows that only exists in the current virtual desktop works fine.

            • Charles says:

Since I split my chrome windows between virtual desktop 1 and 2, could it be that the position of the chrome windows group in one virtual desktop is overwriting the position of the chrome windows in the other virtual desktop?

For example, in virtual desktop 2, half of the chrome windows is hidden, but when moving the chrome windows group, all of the windows position (including the hidden ones) will also be moved, isn’t it? Thus when the hidden windows are shown in virtual desktop 1, the order of the chrome windows group would have change.

            • Again, there’s an issue with Chrome, that’s why I asked to try it without Chrome running. Can you please try it so that:
              * Chrome is not involved.
              * You don’t change grouping settings while windows are open – either disable or don’t disable grouping, and only then open your windows in different virtual desktops.

If you’ll still see that the option doesn’t work, we’ll try to figure it out. If it works, then it’s probably about that issue with Chrome that we already discussed – my reply for it is here.

              • Charles says:

Ok, I have closed chrome and can still reproduce the issue.

From my observation, windows from the same executable that are split between multiple virtual desktops behave like a pinned window, that is, they are moved to the left of the taskbar. I tried it with firefox and sublime text. If I open several firefox windows and move some of it to another desktop, then moving the firefox windows in one desktop will cause the windows in the another desktop to be moved to the left position of the taskbar.

So switching between virtual desktops where there are windows from a same executable in both the virtual desktops will cause the windows in one of the virtual desktop to be treated like a pinned window and moved to the far left. This does not happen when switching between virtual desktops where there is no shared windows from a same executable.

So basically when the windows of an executable exists in multiple virtual, the windows of that executable in some of the virtual desktops will still to the left of the taskbar like a pinned window.

                • OK, I see that there are issues with programs other than Chrome when grouping is not disabled. Perhaps a different method is needed to be able to fix it properly. Unfortunately, it’s a time consuming research and as I replied on the Chrome issue, I’d like to look at it one day but don’t plan to do that in the near future.

                • Charles says:

So another observation, even windows that belongs to different processes (but the same executable) are affected. For example, I run multiple gVim windows in multiple virtual desktops. When I switch between these desktops, the gVim windows are shifted to the left, just like if they are pinned between the desktops.

  44. Steve Brown says:

My companies antivirus software blocks this program. When trying to get them to whitelist, I was forced to send the setup file and all binaries to be vetted by the AntiVirus company.

This is what I was told:

“The software has been examined and the analysis shows it uses adversary tactics and techniques, and sends some company information to the author, including any Email addresses on installed computers.

While the software is not malicious itself, this type of behavior is not conducive to our company’s values or general privacy standards.”

Why does a taskbar tweaker read installed email addresses off of my computer?

    • Hi Steve,

I’m not sure what your antivirus company is talking about. I do send some basic information which helps me develop the program and fix bugs, but not sensitive information such as email addresses.

7+ Taskbar Tweaker sends information in two cases:
      1. When checking for updates. The tweaker checks for updates once every 24 hours, and the query includes basic information such as the current tweaker version, the used tweaker settings and the Windows version. If update checking is disabled, this information is not being sent.
      2. When a crash happens. A crash report is being sent along with similar information.

Again, no email addresses are being sent. Where do they think the tweaker gets email addresses from? The tweaker doesn’t access browser data or files, or any other files which weren’t created by the tweaker.

      • Steve Brown says:

Cylance is the antivirus. I do not know how they inspected the program, this is just what they told me after I gave them the executable to scan directly.

  45. Settings Export-Import says:

How about exporting 7+ Taskbar Tweaker configuration? Where are the settings of a given user stored in?

If it is not possible right now- would you consider adding an option for creating files with settings, that could be then imported to a fresh install on a new system?

    • The settings are stored in the registry in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\7 Taskbar Tweaker branch. You can export it with regedit to a .reg file, and import it on the fresh system.

      • Settings Export-Import says:

You mean all 8 “folder” [i.e. Key] entries?

You could think about adding an option / icon for that somewhere within 7+ Taskbar Tweaker itself

        • You mean all 8 “folder” [i.e. Key] entries?

Yes, just export the whole tree like this.

You could think about adding an option / icon for that somewhere within 7+ Taskbar Tweaker itself

I’ll keep this suggestion in mind. Maybe in one of the future versions. Since it’s not a frequent need and it’s not difficult to do manually, it’s not a high priority for me.

    Hello,

I updated Windows to the latest build. I am using the beta of taskbar tweaker. If the taskbar is set to the left or right side of the screen, I can no longer resize the taskbar to be thinner than the double wide default size.

    • Hi,

I updated Windows to the latest build

Are you referring to Windows 10 version 1903? Or the latest insider build?

I can no longer resize the taskbar to be thinner than the double wide default size

Are you using the no_width_limit advanced option? What behavior do you see? Does the option have no effect? Do other options work?

I just stumbled across 7 Taskbar Tweaker asI searched for a way to make the so-called “large” Windows 10 taskbar icons larger. With the high resolution monitors I use, the taskbar icons seem to shrink to atomic levels. Having just downloaded this program, though, I can’t see an obvious way to make the icons larger. Have I missed something here?
    Thanks.

  48. Settings Export-Import says:

What about that second entry? HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (“7 Taskbar Tweaker” value)

[I must have missed somehow the FAQ when I was looking for answers on this site, as what we talk about now is kind of already answered in it]

And you should know- you have no idea how much your tweaker made my PC modus operandi more efficient and less tedious. And the one most important function for me is even working better now on Windows 10 than before on Windows 7- I am talking about controlling volume with the wheel [it now works instantly, while on the old system it required something like a half a second to catch the focus on the Taskbar]. I have been using it everyday for everything and I almost every day when editing audio- without which I would be loosing time for unproductive clicking. So thank you very much

    • What about that second entry?

It’s being added by the installer (as long as you keep the option to run the tweaker at startup), and contains the tweaker’s path – there’s nothing to customize further or to export.

And thanks for the feedback, I’m glad that you like 7+ Taskbar Tweaker 🙂
The new volume indicator is quite new, it was just added in the latest version.

  49. Karl says:

    Hello

I have installed 7+ Taskbar Tweaker on my company laptop with administrative privileges. When I’m logged in with my admin account, it works as it should.

However, I can’t start it with my normal user account. There’s a Windows error message stating that the app has been blocked by the system administrator.

When I start the app elevated as admin, I get the error as described here:
    https://tweaker.userecho.com/communities/1/topics/482-7-taskbar-tweaker-cant-load-if-explorer-is-launched-with-administrative-privileges

Is there anything else I can do to run the app with my normal user account? Maybe with the help of a powershell script?

On the laptop is Win10 Build 17134 installed.

I hope there is a solution, because I would really like to use one of the options “don’t combine grouped buttons” or “decombine on mouse over”.
On Win7 I achieved the first with a registry entry, which doesn’t work anymore.

    Thanks

    • Hi,

I can’t start it with my normal user account. There’s a Windows error message stating that the app has been blocked by the system administrator.

Perhaps an antivirus or a security policy interferes with the installation. Several aggressive antiviruses or configurations disallow installations in the AppData folder.

      You can try the following:
      1. Try installing the tweaker to the Program Files folder. You need to run the installer as administrator and choose the Program Files folder manually during installation.
      2. Try the portable version of the tweaker. See the FAQ for instructions of extracting the portable version.

When I start the app elevated as admin, I get the error as described here:
      https://tweaker.userecho.com/communities/1/topics/482-7-taskbar-tweaker-cant-load-if-explorer-is-launched-with-administrative-privileges

What’s the message? “7+ Taskbar Tweaker: Could not open explorer’s process.”? That would be strange, since it happens when explorer runs as administrator and the tweaker doesn’t. What you describe is the opposite situation.

      • hacori says:

        Thank you, it works!

I previously tried installing in the program files folder using the “as different user” method (shift + right click) while being logged in as normal user. This always resulted in an error. I have now started the installation as admin instead – with the same credentials – and now the installation completed successfully.
