7+ Taskbar Tweaker

7+ Taskbar Tweaker
7+ Taskbar Tweaker allows you to configure various aspects of the Windows taskbar.
Most of the configuration options it provides can’t be tweaked using the taskbar properties or the registry.
The tweaker is designed for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

Windows 11 Support Status

  • 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn’t support the Windows 11 taskbar, and probably never will. See this blog post for more details.
  • Some of the tweaks are available in Windows 11 as Windhawk mods. See here for the list of mods, and vote for missing mods that you’d like to see implemented. Read more about Windhawk here.
  • 7+ Taskbar Tweaker works on Windows 11 version 23H2 and older with the old taskbar which can be restored with third party tools. See this blog post for more details.

FAQ

Q: Which registry keys does 7+ Taskbar Tweaker modify? I don't need extra processes in my system.
A: The only registry keys the tweaker modifies are its own settings. There are no registry keys for the options it provides. The tweaker does that by injecting a DLL to explorer, hooking/subclassing/some other methods of the dark side.
As for extra processes, the tweaker is a native program, and is very lightweight. It shouldn’t slow down your system, and uses an extremely small amount of memory. Also, you can hide the tray icon if you want.

In case you want to remove the tweaker's settings from the registry, look for them here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\7 Taskbar Tweaker
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (7 Taskbar Tweaker value)

P.S. if you're a programmer, you might want to take a look at the 7+ Taskbar Tweaking Library.

Q: My antivirus complains about 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.
A: It's a false positive. I guarantee that the tweaker binaries (and any other files on this site, unless specifically noted) are 100% clean.
Also remember that the tweaker injects into explorer and modifies its memory, which is indeed suspicious.

Q: Can I Group/Combine/Label only some of the items on the taskbar?
A: Yes, use Taskbar Inspector.

Q: May I use 7+ Taskbar Tweaker in a commercial environment?
A: Yes, feel free to use it wherever you want.

Q: Where is the portable version?
A: When installing the tweaker, choose the Portable type of install, as shown on the image below.
The portable version will be extracted to the selected folder.

Selecting the portable installation type

Note: If the tweaker is already installed on your computer, the option won't be visible. You can launch the setup with the /portable command line switch to force a portable installation.

Q: I want to report a bug/suggest a feature! What is the best way to do it?
A: Post it on the UserEcho page.

Q: I want to translate 7+ Taskbar Tweaker to my language.
A: The archive below contains the files needed to be translated.
Please read readme.txt before proceeding.

    hello!

I was wondering if is there any way to make the taskbar thinner when it is placed at top or at the bottom of the screen, I dont mind if I only can see a half part of the icons, I wanna make it half it thickness.

As always thanks for the great work.

  2. Tom says:

    Hello 🙂
Thank you for a great software!

    On windows 7
The Start button is wider than the taskbar on left side with small Icons,
    Any way to fix this?

    See attached picture:

    Thank you very much!
    Tom

    • Hi Tom,

Please see my reply here. Sorry, but there’s no fix at this time.

      • Truman says:

Thank you VERY MUCH for creating this add-on.

On a Mac … the combination of:

ctrl + [AUDIO Fn] = shortcut to sys pref — [audio options]
ctrl + [VIDEO Fn] = shortcut to sys pref — [display options]

A FAV feature for changing resolution, audio device, etc.

I see PCs can’t quite unify on a single idea for a row of hot keys.
Even those PCs with it, aren’t usually ‘easy’.
They also fail to register significance of trackpads; they NEED to be PERFECT. “Barely not Perfect” = sucks! It’s the MAIN TOOL for nav.

Same in Ubuntu (18/19) Errors between LABEL vs FUNCTION. 🙁
Neither add-ons nor endogenous trackpad controllers work well. 🙁

Worse? They don’t grasp the incredible importance of clear writing. They’re ambiguous & unreliable at best…

Things require pixel-level-precision for effective clicks (resize window)

The TrackPad does NOT move w. ‘surgical precision’ (as Macs DO) !

They need to either make the targets bigger or the pointer better.

And I think it’ll take someone willing and able; they clearly don’t understand or don’t care. 19 iterations and it STILL sucks.

IF ya like Linux/Ubuntu ? Please, consider fixing the trackpad issues.

NO ONE else has. Currently, there are no applications / TP projects which have actually worked. And I’ve tried them all on this…
        Lenovo E580

I’ve basically stopped using Ubuntu bc of it. : ( There’s just no way to fix it with the tools available.

  3. Brandon says:

Love the taskbar tweaker for the little things! Removal of start button and wasted gaps, scrolling for volume… it’s a nice little productivity tool!

If I might suggest a minor addition; is it possible to add a setting so that when you right click the volume system tray icon (in Windows 10) you can get a shortcut to the windows control panel sound options (the same one that opens in Windows 8.1 and earlier)?

Anyhow… thanks for the program, sorry for only being a fly on the wall! ^_^

  4. Bob says:

Is there any way to group programs under my own category, such as Photoshop, After Effects, Adobe Animate or my ebook readers under my category named eBook Readers? I have tried combining, but they don’t combine. I have tried grouping, but can’t get them grouped. There has got to be a way to do this, but I can’t seem to figure it out. And whatever is in the taskbar inspector is beyond me to figure out.

    • You can use the “Drag within/between groups using right mouse button” option or use Taskbar Inspector for the task.

And whatever is in the taskbar inspector is beyond me to figure out.

There’s a help file which comes with the tweaker that you can use to help you.

  5. Bob says:

I tried the drag within/between groups but couldn’t get anything to work.
Nothing dragged, so how is this supposed to work exactly?

  6. Bob says:

First of all…how do you group items together, such as all my Bible apps or all my eBook apps or all my Graphic apps.
That is what I want to do is to group apps together.
Does your program allow that, and if so, how?

  7. Bob says:

OK…I watched your demo and the settings you have there do not match what I have. For one, I do not have the “Force combining group items.” I have “Group by Application ID (default),” “Don’t Group,” “When not grouping, place new items next to the existing ones,” “Don’t group pinned items,” “Drag within/between groups using right mouse button.”
So even when I tried to follow your video, I still could not group items into my own groups.

  8. SC says:

    Hi Michael,

is it somehow possible to configure multiple, permanently displayed, columns in the vertical taskbar?
On my 4K widescreen would be enough unused space for a 2-column vertical taskbar, the scrolling between the button pages is very annoying …

Very thanks for your great support! 🙂

    Best regards, Steffen

  9. SC says:

    As first relief:
Is it possible to move the taskbar buttons between the vertical button pages?

  10. Kurt Willey says:

“Cylance Protect” has flagged + Taskbar Tweaker as malware and it can no longer run on my corporate Laptop.

  11. kofifus says:

Hi, thanks for amazing SW ! with the “Hovering – show thumbnails preview” option is it possible to have the option to eliminate the delay before the thumbs preview appear ? (or make it as short as possible) Thanks!

  12. WindLife365 says:

Hello, when I merge the icon of the taskbar, it is difficult to find the window I want. Can you develop a function that I can color the window as I wish? Thanks

    • Hi,
It was suggested before to allow to customize a group’s text or icon. Adding a color is a similar suggestion. Due to low demand and high complexity of this feature, I don’t plan to implement it for now, but I’ll keep it in mind. Thanks for the feedback.

      • Stefane says:

I’ve been using 7+ Taskbar Tweaker for about 2 weeks now and it’s absolutely amazing. I think this question is the same one I want to ask, but I’m not sure, so I’ll ask it also. I’m looking to change the color of the active window on the Taskbar. Windows 10 highlights the active window in light gray, and it’s almost imperceptible. Would it be possible to implement an option to choose the color of the active window shown on the Taskbar?

        Thanks, Cheers! 🙂

        • That’s a bit different from what WindLife365 asked. Currently 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn’t provide a way to change the colors of the taskbar.

          • Isaac says:

            Hi! thanks a lot Michael!
this ‘7+ Taskbar Tweaker’ is so mutch of a good change and variety in my pc.
I want to join Stefane in his mention since it’s a really an issue for me.
Maybe you/someone have a workaround to improve the current app highlight?

  13. Stick says:

Hi Michael … Stock Vista has a very useful feature where I can quickly press down multiple taskbar buttons by keeping Ctrl down & clicking any button, and each button stays pressed after click. Then for example, I could release Ctrl and right-click any pressed button, choose “Close Group” from the context popup, and that would close all the selected buttons, regardless what application they belong to.

It seems that in stock Win7 this ctrl-click has changed function and now cycles through a grouped set of buttons, when automatic grouping is ON.

In my application, I don’t use automatic grouping, and I could not find a way to enable this nice function on my (old style) linear taskbar with your software on Win7. Is there a way to do it?

    Thanks

  14. Anixx says:

A possibility to return the classic taskbar height of 28px?

In Windows versions NT 3.51 to Win8.1 as well as Win9x when using the Classic theme the taskbar was 28px thick.

Now, on Win10 the taskbar thickness is 30px always. When people theme the taskbar for the Windows Classic theme, it still remains 30px.

I wonder, if it possible add a feature to make the taskbar 28px thick?

  15. Anixx says:

Also, an ability to use subpixel hinting on taskbar?

In Windows 10, the tskbar always uses greyscale anti-aliasing. Is it possible to force subpixel hinting?

Again, the same screenshot for comparison:

    Dear Michael
thank you for your works… ftuitful

I am writing to ask wether your Portable version is available for stable version (namely not beta) and
in such a case, can you give us the download URL?

    I appreciate

    Salvo

    • Hi Salvo,

Yes, it’s the link above (this one). Note that the portable and the non-portable versions are contained in the same file, you just need to select the desired mode during setup. See the FAQ above for more details and a screenshot.

      • Salvo says:

        I apologize
Actually I was trying a first time but I did not noted the combo selection

        I will test your sw

        • Salvo says:

          Very nice!
I like your utility which has a pletora of peculiar features. Much more than what I needed. After I carefully read your help window I understood that what you call “Group” is not what I intent.

I simply wish to add mine personal icon (lets say “Browsers”) so that when I point it opens a menu where I can choose among a sub-list (reminiscent to what you whould call “combined”) with for instance Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Brave and so on.

I hope you are the most appropriate person to address my problem therefore I look forward for your suggestions

POST scriptum: FYK – Let me note a small drwabak: the check box which change the minute showed in the current time actually does the opposite of what it says on the form. This can be explained just because of the translation in italian (?)

          • I simply wish to add mine personal icon […] with for instance Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Brave and so on.

You can use the “Drag within/between groups using right mouse button” option or use Taskbar Inspector for the task. Read the description here and see the video in that post. Hopefully it will answer your questions.

the check box which change the minute showed in the current time actually does the opposite of what it says on the form

I don’t speak Italian, and the translation wasn’t made by me. I assume that you’re referring to the option which is called in English: “Display seconds on the tray clock” (Italian: “Mostra i secondi nell’orologio del tray”).
If you have a better translation, feel free to offer it.

  19. U says:

    Tnx, man!
I am using this only for “Don’t combine grouped buttons”, and this options is great!

  20. Gurra says:

Hey! I really like 7tt so thank you for creating this ^^
Just one little request thou, I’m really annoyed by the small line under/next to the buttons on the taskbar, is it possible for you to add some option in 7tt to remove it? 🙂
(I know it’s there for a reason, but I don’t really use that reason so)

    Hi Michael,

  22. LetsGoBuffalo says:

    Greetings Michael –

I’m running Beta v5.7.0.3 of the Tweaker and have paid for and received an access key. I participate in the Windows Insider Builds program and today I was updated to Version 1903 OS Build 18963. After the system reboot with the Windows Update, I received a could not load library #107.

I have not been a user of 7+tt for very long and this is the first time a Windows Update has broken 7+tt. My question is, what happens next? Will you be updating the tweaker for every Win10 update? How long before you release updates in response to Win10 updates? Are they pushed automatically or if not, how deployed or how do you notify when updates are issued? Basically, just curious to know what to expect as this is my first time going though this.

Incidentally, 7+tt is a phenomenal piece of software. Even though I haven’t been using it long, it has had a profound impact on my productivity so now that it’s gone, I find myself very anxious to get it back! Great work!

    • Hi,

      Version 1903 OS Build 18963

Build 18963 is an insider version of 20H1, not 1903. Looks like it was just released three days ago.

As for your “what happens next” questions, see the blog post (7+ Taskbar Tweaker and Windows 10 insider builds)[https://rammichael.com/7-taskbar-tweaker-and-windows-10-insider-builds]. I hope that it answers all of your questions.

In short, I’ll look at it at my spare time. I do plan to fix any such breakage unless it’s specific to a small subset of the options. Basically, since the insider versions change often, I prefer not to waste a lot of time on compatibility with them. There are no notifications for new beta versions, but you can check the changelog from time to time.

Incidentally, 7+tt is a phenomenal piece of software

Thank you for your feedback and contribution 🙂

    • Hi again,

Please try the newly released v5.7.0.4 beta, which should work with Windows 10 build 18963.

      • LetsGoBuffalo says:

I was upgraded to Windows Preview Build 18965 on Aug 22 2019. I installed the new Beta v5.7.0.4 and can confirm it works. Thanks!

  23. kwapster says:

any way to have this run as a service, that way it starts up immediately with explorer.exe instead of a slight delay at startup

  24. hoshi says:

Thought I’d bring attention to a long standing bug described here: https://www.tenforums.com/customization/90611-7-taskbar-tweaker-duplicate-blank-taskbar-icons-chrome.html

It happens you pin a program to the taskbar (e.g. Explorer, Chrome) and then switch between desktops using Window’s native Ctrl+Win+Left/Right or Dexpot. I think the chances of a duplicate blank icon appearing are higher when you switch between a desktop with an instance of the program open and one without it open. The bug is intermittent so it may take a while before you see it occur.

    • It’s difficult for me to help with this issue since you don’t have a way to reproduce it. In addition, you mention another third party program, Dexpot, which can also be a suspect.

You don’t have many options turned on in the tweaker (assuming you didn’t use the advanced options), so from what you’re using, the most relevant one is “Don’t group”. On the other hand, you’re the first user to report this issue.

If possible, please try using your computer with different configurations and see when the issue appears: try turning off the tweaker, turning off Dexpot, disabling all of the tweaker’s options, etc. Hopefully you’ll be able to find out which condition causes the issue.

  25. Hept0p says:

Thanks for the tool. I tried it in full, hoping to find a setting to fix the worst taskbar handicap ever, in vein :((

Do you plan to introduce a fix to allow reordering of user-pinned taskbar jumplists ?

Being able to reduce the Heigh spacing/padding pretty much all over would also be a great addin

  26. 4c3T says:

Hi. Love this utility! A friggen lifesaver!
But I’ve encountered a small annoyance; When switching between virtual desktops, the order of the taskbar items (Open windows/programs) reverts back to default places. This also occurs with pinned items. Very annoying. Any way to make the program remembering their places?

Otherwise, keep up the good work!

    • Hi,

There’s the virtual_desktop_order_fix advanced option. See the question and answer here.

      • 4c3T says:

Ok. For some reason I didn’t need to do this, this time around. I recently reinstalled Windows as I’ve had lots of trouble with it (Control panel/app interface stopped working for one, and networking between two Win 10 PC’s was slow).

But I couldn’t find the settings (virtual_desktop_order_fix) that was supposed to be found in settings context menu.
I did however find it in the Windows Registry
I changed it to “1” and I have yet to see if it’ll do anything.

For some other reason the hover function over taskbar items stopped showing “tool tip” which I prefer, but when I changed the setting to anything but tool tip it worked again.

I don’t know if this is the result of something made in Winaero Tweaker as I’ve changed a few things there.

It pisses me off that MS keep removing and dumbing down the GUI so that one has to resort to tweaks and other utilities!

It’s like they want us to work un-efficiently with big clunky icons that don’t show any useful info, with no control over files and folders, as well as… The list can be made long.

They really should stop making it “user friendly” and force the users to learn how to use it, instead of the other way around.
They should also remove vital settings from the unstable App API too, but that’ll never happen I guess =0/ Hands down the most stupid thing they’ve ever done IMO!

        Thanks for the reply btw!

  27. 4c3T says:

Aaargh… Got to something wrong with my eyes… Now I found the settings, right click on the icon an select “Advanced options”.
But, at least the settings can be found in the Registry =0P

  28. Nathan says:

love taskbar tweeker but it has stopped working. An error message comes up saying “could not load library (1003)”. I have uninsitalled and reinstalled but still message. Any ideas?

  29. Jason says:

I’m so glad you keep this updated. It’s why I’ve donated in the past. Every time I finally update Windows 10, I find that you have a new version. Thank you!

  30. Charles says:

One solution to handle the taskbar ordering problem is to modify the ApplicationID of the windows by prefixing the ApplicationID with the virtual desktop number.

I have tried this method by running an unmodified application where the generated ApplicationID is the application executable path in two virtual desktop. Running windows across virtual desktop having the same ApplicationID has the problem that Windows sometimes reorder them. Then I run another instance of the application but this time I change the ApplicationID using SHGetPropertyStoreForWindow. The result is that the new window can be moved without being reordered by Windows.

  31. Dave says:

I absolutely love this app — thanks so much!
One question and/or suggestion. When I set the “disable_topmost” setting to 2 (this is my most pressing reason for using the app), the taskbar goes behind maxed windows just like the gods intended. However, when I press the Windows key, now the start menu pops up on top of the taskbar, instead of just above it, and blocks all my pinned icons, quick launch, etc. — this is inconvenient, because usually I’m hitting the Windows key to get to my own stuff on the taskbar, not the start menu. Any possible fix for it? Thanks again!

  32. Hugo says:

Definitely this is a great app.

However, not sure if this could be possible (I have read the comments but didn’t see this being mentioned, I might have missed it)

Is it possible to “capture” a thumbnail and show it as a semi transparent one when moving / draggin one of the windows thumbnails grouped from position in the taskbar?

Not sure if this could be added though

  33. joao says:

    Hi

it’s possible to modify the space, width, of the notification icon at right side of clock?

It’s possible to add a feature of replace it, the icon, with the number of notification or just show the icon when has new notifcation.

thank you for this great tool.

  34. VEG says:

I know that Windows 7 is quite obsolete, but it is still quite popular and I use it on my main home machine (and Windows 10 at work). I use classic theme now (because it works better with Remote Desktop).

Just wanted to mention that there is a small issue with the w7_show_desktop_classic_corner fix. It works perfectly when I click on the button slowly. But when I click fast, it just moves cursor to the place of the “Show Desktop” button, but the action itself is not executed. If I click fast on the “Show Desktop” button, it works. If I click fast in the left bottom corner, the cursor moves to the “Start” button and it is opened, so Microsoft’s implementation of the same fix for the “Start” button and its corner works perfectly when I click fast.

Not urgent, just wanted to inform you in case if it is easy to fix and you’ll be looking in the code somewhere around.

  41. JJon says:

Ok, I think I’ve figured it out.

With the latest update, v. 5.7.0.5, users in Win10 Build 18362.385 are getting the “Could not load library” error.
Users in Win10 Build 18363.385 can use the tweaker flawlessly.

I recommend anyone using the 18362.385 build to update now. It’ll work!

It’s all because 19H1 and 19H2 exist separately.

  42. Manuj says:

    Windows 10 Build: 18362.387

    thanks for helping with this!

    • v5.7.0.5 fixed the issue only for Windows 10 version 1909. Apparently you’re using Windows 10 version 1903. Please try the 5.7.0.6 beta version, which should fix the issue for both versions.

      • Manuj says:

I downloaded the 5.7.0.6 version from above, but when I install it – the installer still shows it as v5.7.0.5 ? and this time I got the error about library 5 . Thanks for looking into it ….

        • It’s probably a cache issue. Please try again. If you still get v5.7.0.5, try to download the file in an incognito window to avoid cached results.

          • Manuj says:

By opening in incognito I did get 5.7.0.6 installed, but during installation it gave an error about problem with inject.dll , I ignored that error and installation completed. But after the application opened, it said library 102 issue and the tweaker app was opened but it was not working 🙁

Sorry for bothering you again with this, but could you please look into this, thanks a lot!

    • Hi Martin,
I’m not familiar with the URL you pasted (heise.de), and can’t say whether it’s malicious. It’s always best to download 7+ Taskbar Tweaker from the official website (this one). If you get an alert about a file downloaded from this website, then it’s a false positive – please report about it to the security product company so that the’ll remove the false positive detection.

Just updated Windows 10 and after the update+reboot I get this error when starting 7 taskbar tweaker:
    Could not load library (5)

Hope this will be fixed with next (beta) release.

    Thanks!

Neither 5.7 nor 5.7.0.5 works when Windows Updated to Build 183362.387. I’m not in the Insider program so I can’t update to 18363.385 right now. The solution was to roll back the KB4517211 update.

I’ve paused Windows Updates so 7tt keeps working (can’t do without it!). Can someone advise when a newer beta will work with 183362.387 or when non-insiders can update to 18363.385?
