7+ Taskbar Tweaker

7+ Taskbar Tweaker
7+ Taskbar Tweaker allows you to configure various aspects of the Windows taskbar.
Most of the configuration options it provides can’t be tweaked using the taskbar properties or the registry.
The tweaker is designed for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

Windows 11 Support Status

  • 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn’t support the Windows 11 taskbar, and probably never will. See this blog post for more details.
  • Some of the tweaks are available in Windows 11 as Windhawk mods. See here for the list of mods, and vote for missing mods that you’d like to see implemented. Read more about Windhawk here.
  • 7+ Taskbar Tweaker works on Windows 11 with the old taskbar which can be restored with third party tools. See this blog post for more details.

FAQ

Q: Which registry keys does 7+ Taskbar Tweaker modify? I don’t need extra processes in my system.
A: The only registry keys the tweaker modifies are its own settings. There are no registry keys for the options it provides. The tweaker does that by injecting a DLL to explorer, hooking/subclassing/some other methods of the dark side.
As for extra processes, the tweaker is a native program, and is very lightweight. It shouldn’t slow down your system, and uses an extremely small amount of memory. Also, you can hide the tray icon if you want.

In case you want to remove the tweaker’s settings from the registry, look for them here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\7 Taskbar Tweaker
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (“7 Taskbar Tweaker” value)

P.S. if you’re a programmer, you might want to take a look at the 7+ Taskbar Tweaking Library.

Q: My antivirus complains about 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.
A: It’s a false positive. I guarantee that the tweaker binaries (and any other files on this site, unless specifically noted) are 100% clean.
Also remember that the tweaker injects into explorer and modifies its memory, which is indeed suspicious.

Q: Can I Group/Combine/Label only some of the items on the taskbar?
A: Yes, use Taskbar Inspector.

Q: May I use 7+ Taskbar Tweaker in a commercial environment?
A: Yes, feel free to use it wherever you want.

Q: Where is the portable version?
A: When installing the tweaker, choose the Portable type of install, as shown on the image below.
The portable version will be extracted to the selected folder.

Selecting the portable installation type

Note: If the tweaker is already installed on your computer, the option won’t be visible. You can launch the setup with the /portable command line switch to force a portable installation.

Q: I want to report a bug/suggest a feature! What is the best way to do it?
A: Post it on the UserEcho page.

Q: I want to translate 7+ Taskbar Tweaker to my language.
A: The archive below contains the files needed to be translated.
Please read readme.txt before proceeding.

  1. Thijs says:

    Hi, wonderful program and thanks for sharing it with the world.

    My question is regarding moving the taskbar to vertical position and applying ‘no_width_limit’=1 to make it small.

    Even if I lock the task bar, when I reboot, the task bar is unfortunately wide again, even wider than without limit. How can I keep the task bar small without manually readjusting every time?

    Thanks!

  2. Thijs says:

    PS: Hmm maybe the solution for the small vertical bar is not to lock the task bar. Am I correct?

  3. SID says:

    Thank you for such a wonderful program.
    Can I a tweak for only just to get the effect of “no_width_limit=1”? As I am not using any other features of 7+.Also, this program needs to load at startup so it takes a bit of time to become narrow, I want to modify my system to get this effect, can I get help on this?
    I am on windows 10.

    • Well, this option is not built into Windows, and 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn’t just set a flag. The tweaker manipulates explorer to make the taskbar narrower, and thus it has to be running. There’s no way around it. See also the first question of the FAQ above.

  4. Devon says:

    Love your app, thanks so much! The download link for the latest version has been broken for a few days however, thought you should know.

    • Thanks, I’m glad that you like the tweaker 🙂 there were several issues with the website hosting lately, but I don’t remember that it lasted so long (a few days). Hopefully the issues are gone now.

      • devon says:

        Still not working 🙁 Error 522 from cloudflare

        • The file loads on my computer. Can you post a screenshot?
          I know that my hoster bans some IPs, e.g. users from Ukraine reported that they cannot access the website. But then the whole website is unavailable, while for you it sounds like only the exe shows an error.

            EDIT :
            It looks like it’s probably related to “HTTPS Everywhere”
            type extensions. I added rammichael.com to it’s whitelist
            (While on rammichael.com page, LMB click on “HTTPS Everywhere” toolbar icon, clicked check box for “disable
            HTTPS Everywhere”)
            After doing the above, I had no Err:521 (Web server is down) Cloudflare screens. (tried six times)

            ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
            So, clicking “Web page” attempts to open :
            rammichael.com/7-taskbar-tweaker
            I’m guessing it has something to do with the newest
            update(s) of Firefox Quantum -&- “HTTPS Everywhere”
            and other such HTTPS forcing extensions.
            (it, of course, attempts to force it to:
            https://rammichael.com/7-taskbar-tweaker)
            Maybe it’s also relates to when, as it does for me, Firefox(FF)
            usually pops-up a “User Account Control” protection window whenever a new tab in FF, external to FF, is requested to be opened to connect to the internet.
  5. Marchin says:
    Hi i’m using “disable_topmost = 2” and it works great except for the start menu. I have the taskbar on the left, and when i open the menu it is positioned over the taskbar, and i have to close it in order to access my pinned programs. Is there any to move the start menu slightly to the right or show the task bar without opening the star menu with a single hotkey?
  6. v1tesse says:
    Hi, is there a way to hide labels for only some apps?
    So, most of my open apps have both the icon and text visible, but for some of them, I want to only see the icon.
    That way apps like WhatsApp, where there is only 1 instance, take up less space and text for other apps is easier to read.
    Taking another step forward, and I’m pretty sure I’m approaching feature request territory here – it would be cool to have right-click options to combine-decombine, hide-show label on a per-app basis
    • Hi,
      is there a way to hide labels for only some apps?
      Yes. See the third question of the FAQ at the top of this page.
      it would be cool to have right-click options to combine-decombine
      Currently, there are the “Decombine: Active group” and “Decombine: On mouse hover” options. For now, I don’t plan other options.
      hide-show label
      Check the right_drag_toggle_labels advanced option.
  9. Yu says:
    first of all I love the program. Is there any posibility to add a funtion that makes the taskbar even thinner when it is placed on sides of the screen?
  10. CactusPie says:
    It seems that “Drag within/between groups using right mouse button” doesn’t seem to be working properly. The item just jumps all over the taskbar and if it had a hidden label then the label reappears again.
    If it helps here are my settings:
    http://cactuspie.com/snapshots/4sUlhT.png
    • Since you’re using “Don’t group”, you won’t be able to create groups right away with this option. You need to understand that the option acts as a shortcut to changing the AppId of the target window. You can play with it in Taskbar Inspector and see how it behaves.
      Now, if you’re using “Don’t group”, the only AppIds that will group are random_group_xxxxxxxx groups and AppIds that you chose to always group in Taskbar Inspector. So, one option to create a group is to do the following:
      • Right drag the first item out of the taskbar, and by that changing its AppId to random_group_xxxxxxxx (that’s also why the label may re-appear, depending on your settings).
      • Right drag the second item into the first item. Since the AppId is random_group_xxxxxxxx, a group can be created even though “Don’t group” is set.
  12. William Scheef Jr says:
    I have this issue where Windows Explorer will sometimes appear over the top of full screen video, like the HTML5 player on youtube for example.
    I don’t know what is causing this or how to fix it, but I know it is linked to 7TT because it goes away when I terminate the 7TT program.
    I am using version 5.6 with Windows 10 Pro 1803
    • I know it is linked to 7TT because it goes away when I terminate the 7TT program.
      That’s not necessarily means that it’s caused by 7+ Taskbar Twekaer. The tweaker does some taskbar state “refresh” when it launches and terminates, so perhaps that just happens to temporarily fix the issue. If you can, try find a way to reproduce the issue, and I’ll check it out.
  20. Rob says:
    Hi, I find this programme really useful, but it’s been flagged as dangerous by my anti-virus software (avast) and has been moved to the virus chest. Any ideas why? I’d like to keep using it if possible, but only if it’s safe. Thanks, Rob
  21. JDS says:
    First let me say that this is a great tool that makes up for ridiculous shortcomings of Windows task bar.
    Unfortunately in my companies infinite wisdom the security team has denied my request for an exception for task bar tweaker because the security software flags the memory access as suspicious.
    The one main feature I find that I cannot live without is the ability to not have the task bar items force put together. My preference is the last instance of a program appears at the far right not next to all the other applications of the same type.
    My question is if there is any other way to achieve this or if an option could be available that would not trigger security software?
    • if an option could be available that would not trigger security software
      It depends on the security software. It might be possible to use a different mechanism of running code inside explorer, such as registering a shell extension. If you’re a programmer and want to explore this possibility, you can use this article of mine which explains which function should be patched and how for ungrouping. It’s in Russian, but you can use Google Translate.
      Another option is to make every window have a different AppId. You can set an AppId for a window using a function like this. There are drawbacks to this method, e.g. you’ll lose things such as pinned items on the taskbar items’ right click menu.
  22. Anonymous says:
    Hi, just wanted to say that there’s a big warning from windows 10 when I try to execute this, and afterwards Avira detects this as a virus, grab it and launch a system scan.
    This is a brilliant tool to move windows previews, but lately following an update of the program (it was no longer working on windows 10 due to windows update) I get this error, as a result I cannot take the risk to use it on professional pc. something’s fishy.
    Hi! Thx for the wonderful app!
    I’ve been using 7+ Taskbar Tweaker to manually reorder items that belong to the same app (group).
    My Windows 10 has updated to build 17763 — and the app would no longer start: it crashes with error code 5.
    Please help. I can provide more feedback if necessary.
  26. Stelios says:
    The last 3-4 days it doesn’t work after restarting the pc and I have to re-install it.
    Today after re-installation the pc was crushed. I restarted the pc,and then 7-task tweaker was not installed.
  27. Stelios says:
    I am using 5.6.1 but the problem remains.
    • Are you using an insider build? If you are, please see my reply here. If not, please provide more details: what do you mean by “the pc was crushed”? Do you get an error message? What exactly does it say?
      • Stelios says:
        Hi,
        I was meaning that the explorer process was crashed even I was restarting it. Finally I restarted the windows.
        I don’t know what is an insider built. I used the last version that I downloaded from here.
  28. Rodolfo says:
    I’ve been using 7+ Taskbar Tweaker for a long time. After this new update, it doesn’t work anymore. I install it, the icon goes to the notification area, but it simply doesn’t do anything. If I right-click, it shows nothing, even for the other icons.
    Also, once I turn my pc off and turn it on again, taksbar tweaker is not installed anymore.
    • Which version of the tweaker do you have? Are you using an insider build of Windows? Do you get an error message? If you do, what exactly does it say?
      • Rodolfo says:
        I was using version 5.6.1. I don’t know what is an insider build of Windows, so probably no. I am using Windows 10 Home (version 1803 – OS Build 17134.472). I do not get any error message.
        • OK, do you have a security software such as an antivirus or an antimalware? Since you’re saying that the tweaker is not installed after a restart, perhaps it’s being removed by a security program.
          • Rodolfo says:
            There is a real possibility of my antivirus be removing the tweaker. I just checked here, and 7tt_setup.exe is on the “Virus Chest” of my antivirus. Anyway, I have downloaded version 5.6(.0) and it is working normally here, so my problem is solved.
  29. Rodolfo says:
    Is it possible to download older versions of 7+ Taskbar Tweaker?
  30. Bonaducci says:
    Hi,
    During last update my company security settings blocked installation of newest 7TT.
    Request for “7tt_setup.exe” is Rejected
    Approval Response: File is malicious and banned. Kindly ask you to remove this from your machine.
    This security system is provided by Parity. I wonder if something changed in last version that might be the cause or rather they just woke up that it uses DLL injection to work.
    Currently running 5.6
    Update blocked by security 5.6.1
    • Hi,
      I wonder if something changed in last version
      Nope, nothing that’s related to injection.
      or rather they just woke up that it uses DLL injection to work.
      Either that, or maybe they falsely detect the new version of the tweaker as malicious. Perhaps you can contact them for a clarification.
  31. RA says:
    For 7+ Taskbar Tweaker, a really useful feature would be to right click on a taskbar item, and then be able to change the label/name. Any chance that could be included in a future version?
  32. The Real Joe says:
    Hi,
    Is it possible for Tweaker to sort the taskbar items when grouped? For example, if I have a bunch of explorer folders opened, they group in the order they are opened, eg:
    r:\folder1
    c:\videos
    p:\music
    c:\data
    f:\etc…
    …I would rather that when I open explorer folders they group in a sorted fashion like:
    c:\data
    c:\videos
    f:\etc…
    p:\music
    r:\folder1
    Is this possible?
    • Hi,
      Yes, it’s possible to sort items in a group with Taskbar Inspector. See here for a screenshot. That’s also possible to configure a mouse shortcut for sorting with the advanced options, see the help file for more details.
      • The Real Joe says:
        Thanks, I see that.
        Is it possible to have Tweaker do this automatically when new windows are opened? I just tried sorting the windows manually as shown, and it worked, but then when I opened C:\ it ended up at the end of the list again, not sorted.
  33. JT says:
    Hello 🙂
    Thx for your wonderful program.
    I have a little problem for a few days.
    I have reinstalled the latest version of the program, but every time I restart my computer, the program is no longer there.
    It’s as if he’s deleted himself.
    I just tried to reinstall it right now. When the program opens it removes itself directly and closes all my open windows.
    I feel like it’s due to a Windows update
    Any Idea ?
    Sorry for my English
  34. Erik says:
    I just found out about this Tweaker, Love it, Thank you!
    About configuring the Mouse wheel:
    Not important but it took me a while figuring out the difference of ‘taskbar’ and ‘notification area’ with ‘Control volume ..’, worked alike for me.
    Then a realized the obvious.. I already had ticked ‘Cycle between windows’ and of course then volume control only worked in the notification area despite the choice I made.
    Maybe a hint until next version.
    • Thanks for the feedback Erik.
      of course then volume control only worked in the notification area despite the choice I made.
      That’s not entirely correct. Volume control should have also worked in the region to the left of the task list, such as over the start button.
  35. Lincoln says:
    Hello. I am sure you already know, but on the small chance that you do not, 7+TT did not survive last night’s Windows 10 Cumulative Update. It usually does survive the monthly updates, but not this one. Received a “could not load library” error message. I hope this helps.
    • Lincoln says:
      Update: I just found and installed the most recent version available – 5.6.1 – and the program is up and running again. So if anyone else finds that 7+TT is not working for them today, this worked for me.
      • Aiman says:
        Yep, I just had that same issue with the new Windows update (today is March 13, 2019).
        I just upgraded Taskbar Tweaker to version 5.6.1, and it works great as of the new Windows updates.
        Thanks for such a great and useful program Ram Michael =)
  36. Osman Tekkanat says:
    Does the program have the ability to save open tabs?
    Like getting back the accidentally closed tabs.
    • What do you mean by “open tabs”? If you mean re-opening a window which was accidentally closed, there’s no such feature. It would be tricky to implement correctly, since the way to re-open a closed window can be different depending on the application.
  37. Panos says:
    Hi, amazing utility, I have been using it for ages. I would like to suggest an addition though, that would help a lot. For the Taskbar Items, could you add the option to show i. Thumbnail preview ii. List iii. Tooltip also for Right-click and Middle-click conditions as well? Because I have set Hovering to do nothing and there is no other way to access the tooltip or the list view as a result. Many thanks and keep up the great work!
  38. DavidH says:
    Having issue getting 7TT to run at Windows startup, but No issues installing it. Must be due to new security restrictions on my work laptop.
    Ways I have been able to get it to run:
    1) Safe Mode, but Not really an option.
    2) Open Task Manager > File menu > Run new task > type in C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\7+ Taskbar Tweaker\7+ Taskbar Tweaker.exe > Check the “Create this task with administration privileges”
    3) Type CMD in either Cortana or Run (win-r) then press they Ctrl-Shift-Enter. This should bring up a True Administrative Command Prompt window. Change directory to C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\7+ Taskbar Tweaker and then run 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.exe
    4) I have found no other ways to start 7TT on that laptop. Was not even able to get it work using Task Scheduler.
    Unfortunately, Windows will not allow simulated keyboard input in those areas, so no way to start automatically using a macro program and will have to start 7TT manually each time, but better than not being able to run it at all.
    • Looks like the common property of the four ways is that the tweaker is being run as administrator. It’s not required, but perhaps the security restrictions prevent the tweaker from functioning otherwise.
      What about navigating to C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\7+ Taskbar Tweaker, right clicking on 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.exe and choosing to run as administrator? Does that work?
      Also see my reply here.
      • DavidH says:
        Hello RaMMicHaeL,
        Thanks for the reply!
        I tired checking Run As Admin on the exe and I get the same as when I try to run it manually from the Start Menu. It gets me a 7TT icon in the system tray that disappears when I mouse over it. 7TT does not show up in Task Manager.
        This morning, I’m not able to get this (Type CMD in either Cortana or Run (win-r) then press they Ctrl-Shift-Enter) to work.
        But doing this ( Open Task Manager > File menu > Run new task > type in C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\7+ Taskbar Tweaker\7+ Taskbar Tweaker.exe > Check the “Create this task with administration privileges”) still works.
        I tried the Task Scheduler as well. I trigger At Log On and Run With Highest Privileges. When I run with a 0 to 2 second delay, I get ‘7TT could not find the Taskbar’ error message. If I run with 3 seconds or longer I get the disappearing 7TT icon in the system tray.
        Anything else you can think of for me to try?
        Back when I first got this laptop I had similar issues, but was able to get it to work by doing this:
        1) Install 7TT V5.4, gets DLL error message.
        2) Boot up with Safemode and install 7TT V6.5.
        3) Reboot into normal mode and 7TT worked normally.
        Tried to get that to work this time, but no go.
  39. Aufgeschissener Kunde says:
    Because of my work, I tend to have a LOT of windows open at the same time. For productivity, it’s critical that I be able to re-arrange the order of open windows, which is why I use Taskbar Tweaker.
    Avast however seems to really hate this program. After an avast update, avast raised hell when I started Taskbar Tweaker. It offered to make an exception, but then when I told it to, Taskbar Tweaker wouldn’t respond. It seemed that avast did not actually make the exception rule as, after I killed the tweaker process and started it again, avast would again scream at me, and the entire problem was repeated. I even manually made the exception rule and avast continued to ignore the exception rules for Taskbar Tweaker.
    Luckily, what worked was to re-install Taskbar Tweaker.
    Just a little problem : when i set w10_large_icons to 1, classic programs icons are nicely restored to 32×32, but MS modern apps icons look blurry (like edge, windows store etc …) with the same parameter.
    For exemple, Snip & Sketch modern app 32×32 icon must look like this : https://reho.st/self/a1a74097a3799e012b99f2495a66fd5169a4b2ec.png
    With 7TT, same app icon pinned on taskbar (with 32×32 size parameter) looks like this : https://reho.st/self/ea65dd8371f577d17507e52ceac5638ff92a4d7a.png
    Zag.
    Hello,
    I can’t use Window 7 without my 7+TT.It’s launched at Windows Startup.
    Is there a way not to display the main Window of 7+TT at Startup and hide it to the Systray directly ?
    Thanks
    JP
    Thanks a lot for your answer and for your essential program.
    Problem solved.
    Every time I try to update 7TT I get the error:
    “””
    Error opening file for writing:
    C:\Users[name]\AppData\Roaming\7+ Taskbar Tweaker\7+ Taskbar Tweaker.exe
    Click Abort to stop the installation, Retry to try again, or Ignore to skip this file.
    “””
    I’ve tried exiting 7TT and killing explorer.exe to no avail. The only thing that seems to work is completely uninstalling, restarting, then installing fresh, but that’s a pain.
    Any ideas on how to fix this?
    • I have no ideas as of why that happens. None of the other users reported a similar issue. Perhaps your antivirus software locks the tweaker’s exe file for some reason.
      I’ve tried exiting 7TT and killing explorer.exe to no avail
      Did you verify that the tweaker’s process is not running at that point?
      You can also try to find out which program locks the tweaker’s exe file by using one of the methods here:
    I love this program. 10/10 for me. I hope you can put the ability to blur or make the taskbar transparent.
  47. Edward says:
    Since the most recent 7TT update, I’ve noticed that reordered Chrome windows will randomly revert to the ‘launch’ order. It happens at every unlock event, but will also happen silently during normal use.
    7TT version: v5.6.2
    W10 version: 10.0.17134 Build 17134
    Chrome ver: 73.0.3683.86 (Official Build) (64-bit)
    • It has been reported before. The tweaker update is unlikely to be related, since the recent updates only contain minor, specific fixes and compatibility updates. My guess would be that it’s related to Chrome’s behavior, but I haven’t had the chance to investigate it yet.
      Did you check whether it happens without the tweaker running? If it does, we’ll be able to conclude for sure that it has to do with Chrome.
    Just wanted to add that my Avira detected a virus in the setup file, an I’ve submitted it to analysis on their site and it returned clean, and it seems to have been detected due to high heuristics.
  49. Tony B says:
    I currently have the 5.6.2 version, will you be releasing a new beta anytime soon?
  50. Tony B says:
    Never mind. I don’t have the new beta. Just downloaded it.
