7+ Taskbar Tweaker
7+ Taskbar Tweaker allows you to configure various aspects of the Windows taskbar.
Most of the configuration options it provides can’t be tweaked using the taskbar properties or the registry.

  • 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn’t support the Windows 11 taskbar, and probably never will. See this blog post for more details.
  • Some of the tweaks are available in Windows 11 as Windhawk mods. See here for the list of mods, and vote for missing mods that you’d like to see implemented. Read more about Windhawk here.
  • 7+ Taskbar Tweaker works on Windows 11 with the old taskbar which can be restored with third party tools. See this blog post for more details.

FAQ

Q: Which registry keys does 7+ Taskbar Tweaker modify? I don’t need extra processes in my system.
A: The only registry keys the tweaker modifies are its own settings. There are no registry keys for the options it provides. The tweaker does that by injecting a DLL to explorer, hooking/subclassing/some other methods of the dark side.
As for extra processes, the tweaker is a native program, and is very lightweight. It shouldn’t slow down your system, and uses an extremely small amount of memory. Also, you can hide the tray icon if you want.

In case you want to remove the tweaker’s settings from the registry, look for them here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\7 Taskbar Tweaker
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (“7 Taskbar Tweaker” value)

P.S. if you’re a programmer, you might want to take a look at the 7+ Taskbar Tweaking Library.

Q: My antivirus complains about 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.
A: It’s a false positive. I guarantee that the tweaker binaries (and any other files on this site, unless specifically noted) are 100% clean.
Also remember that the tweaker injects into explorer and modifies its memory, which is indeed suspicious.

Q: Can I Group/Combine/Label only some of the items on the taskbar?
A: Yes, use Taskbar Inspector.

Q: May I use 7+ Taskbar Tweaker in a commercial environment?
A: Yes, feel free to use it wherever you want.

Q: Where is the portable version?
A: When installing the tweaker, choose the Portable type of install, as shown on the image below.
The portable version will be extracted to the selected folder.

Selecting the portable installation type

Note: If the tweaker is already installed on your computer, the option won’t be visible. You can launch the setup with the /portable command line switch to force a portable installation.

Q: I want to report a bug/suggest a feature! What is the best way to do it?
A: Post it on the UserEcho page.

Q: I want to translate 7+ Taskbar Tweaker to my language.
A: The archive below contains the files needed to be translated.
Please read readme.txt before proceeding.

  9. shina says:

So, is it possible switch window AlwaysOnTop?

    • Nope, but this was requested before.
It’s not as straightforward to implement in the new (Windows 7 and up) taskbar, as there are items with different widths, such as pinned items, grouped items, combined items, etc.

    • I’ve just implemented the option in the latest beta version of the tweaker.

      • anon says:

doesn’t seem to be working, were the top items suppose to be aligned now with my bottomrow? (my start menu is hidden and I use the classic theme if that makes any difference, i have no pinned icon).

        • Here’s how it is supposed to look:
          http://imgur.com/a/MgXCC

You’ve enabled the option in the Advanced Options editor, right?

          • anon says:

It works, i was just coming back to post that i enabled the advanced option, but you beat me to it. You are GOD ! Thanks!

totally unrelated: i hide my start button, but you know how you kept a little bit of space, i’d like it to be like in StartKiller with no space at all (only StartKiller is buggy).

THANKS SO MUCH for taking the time! Were I from a 1st world cntry I would totally donate!

      • Tibor says:

Thank you very much this new feature in the tweak!

I was looking in Windows 7 as a ‘bad feature’ while upto Vista this was working fine. But hey once again I am happy and my faith returned!

      • lameboyadvance says:

Just found your utility and it’s just what I’ve been looking for! Great job!

I’ve enabled the tray_icons_padding option and it seems to work fine, however on this computer (Win 7 Classic mode) there is a fixed width area to the right of the tray icons that stays blank, leaving a portion of the tray area unused. This might have something to do with the dimensions of the taskbar in classic mode, or the fact I’ve hidden the Show Desktop button.
Can this constant width area be fixed so the full tray icon area can be used at all?

        • Does it look fine when tray_icons_padding is disabled?
If you could provide screenshots when tray_icons_padding is on and when it’s off, that would be great.

          • lameboyadvance says:

…Sorry, I got my settings mixed up.
I meant to say the ‘multirow_equal_width’ option (although I did also enable the icon padding option), but what I was referring to was the empty space you get on the right side of the taskbar when the ‘Reserve empty space on taskbar’ option is enabled. I unchecked that and it went away…
…However it seems it is needed for the fixed width taskbar buttons to actually work?

            • …However it seems it is needed for the fixed width taskbar buttons to actually work?

multirow_equal_width should work in both cases.
              Screenshots:

              • lameboyadvance says:

I’ve just spent a while trying different combinations of settings, adding/removing toolbars, locking the taskbar, icon sizes etc. Sometimes it would seem like it was possibly working, but mostly it didn’t seem to have any effect.
I had almost given up when I noticed under the Grouping options you have checked the “Don’t group” option. I checked that and it started working perfectly as expected.
Now that that works, combined with hiding the Show Desktop icon, setting the tray icon padding to 2(px), and adding the QuickLaunch toolbar my Windows 7 taskbar now looks identical to my XP one (apart from the Win7 icons…)
Thanks again for your help and effort.

  10. davis60 says:

Hey, after I switched from dongle to broadband, I have been getting these randomly, and after that 7+tt don’t work.

  11. Bruce McN says:

With the option to control the volume through the mouse scroll wheel over the notification area, could you also implement a middle click=mute toggle when the mouse is over the notification area.
If this is a problem, then maybe having the volume control/scroll & middle click=mute toggle area over the tray clock.

    Thanks for the great program!

    • A similar feature is already implemented: you can middle click the volume control tray icon to toggle mute.
Note that you can also use the empty space options.

      • Bruce McN says:

The middle click over the volume control is a much smaller area than the tray clock (quicker to navigate to the larger area). You have the ability to mute over the taskbar – it would be nice to see middle click support over the tray or over the clock as well.

  12. poidi says:

Hi there! love the TaskInspector to manually group windows!

But it would be great to have rules to group windows based on there title.

i use plenty of puty sessions, and in the title there is the host, which i am connected to – would be great to be able to group them automatically.

actually i use kitty, and there i can define different window-icons for different hosts – so that would be another possibility to group by window icon?

  13. Argos says:

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

  14. Anthony says:

I really like 7+ taskbar tweaker. I have a feature request. Can you find a way to restore the date displayed under the time in the lower-right corner, but when the menubar is set to small icons? I really like displaying seconds.

  15. rookie1024 says:

I love it! The single-click pinned app launch was the most annoying feature ever, and this has a fix for it!

  16. Livven says:

Just a heads up, Windows 8.1 Update 1 seems to be have broken 7+ Taskbar Tweaker. I get a “Could not load library (107)” error on startup and while the settings page can be opened just fine, none actually have any effect. Trying to open the taskbar inspector says “Not injected into explorer”.

  17. Jacker says:

After I downloaded and installed Windows important updates, it gives me a error message on startup:

I love this program. Is it possible to add a feature that if you click on an app inside a group it minimises all window but the one you clicked from that group? I’d like to use this to keep the explorer windows minimised when not using them.

  19. nameme says:

    thanks for this software

  20. Derek says:

I noticed that cycling tabs (via mouse wheel) does not work going left when on the Windows 7 file/copy dialog. In fact I can scroll to go right, but not left.

    • I could reproduce the issue, but it seems like an issue of explorer rather than an issue of the tweaker.

      Look at the following screenshot:
      http://i.snag.gy/kwTsE.jpg

The “Moving” window has a taskbar button. Also, the window is the owner of the “Folder In Use” window, which locks it.
Normally, as “Folder In Use” is a descendant of “Moving”, the taskbar button should be related to it as well. But they have some weird relation. As you can see in the screenshot, “Folder In Use” is the foreground window, but the taskbar button is not activated.

A similar issue happens without the “Folder In Use” window. When clicking on the taskbar button of the folder window, the move/copy dialog is focused instead.

  21. K says:

Can you add an option to set a custom height of the taskbar?

  22. Mike says:

    Hi,

thanks for your 7+ Taskbar Tweaker tool, I’m using it together with Classic Shell on Windows 8.1.

    This is my taskbar:
    http://s14.directupload.net/images/140421/gxtw8fpx.jpg

and I would like that the “Quick Launch Bar” is fixed so that it’s not possible to move “taskbar-symbols” in the “quick launch bar”. Here for example:
    http://s14.directupload.net/images/140421/etgqd8q2.jpg

    Is this possible?

  24. Nathan says:

Can you make an version for ARM devices pls

    • This is not planned for the near future. I don’t have experience with ARM, or an ARM device with Windows. I don’t know whether the tricks I use on x86 can be applied on ARM.

Also, does Microsoft allow to run third party apps on ARM? Last time I read about it, I think that only store apps were supported.

  25. pingu says:

Hi ,just found your app.It works amazing.Do you open your source code for public? i would like to know how you do Taskbar item-hovering-tool tip/nothing.If you don’t mind because i’m currently stuck working on that for my project.

    Thanks! Awesome job!

    • Hi,

No, there’s no source code available.
I’d be glad to help you, but I’m afraid that the solution might not be what you’re looking for. The tweaker injects a library inside the explorer’s process, and uses undocumented manipulations to achieve its goals. This stuff is not easy to implement, and not portable.

I’m curious, what kind of project are you working on?

  26. Crystal says:

Hi, thanks so much for developing this awesome tool. For some reason, when my Windows Automatic Update ran yesterday, my windows are now being grouped again, almost as if Taskbar Tweaker is not working any more. I also updated Java on my computer. I have now uninstalled and re-installed Taskbar Tweaker twice with 2 restarts, with no luck. Is anyone else having this same issue as of April 25, 2014? Does anyone have any suggestions?

    • Crystal says:

I am using Windows 7, by the way. Technically a 5-year-old computer that came with XP and was upgraded to Win7 a few weeks ago. If that makes a difference.

      • I’ve just checked it on a Windows 7 PC with all updates installed, and it works as expected for me. Could you check whether grouping is the only option which doesn’t work?

        • Crystal says:

Thanks so much for the reply! Well, the clock is showing seconds, so at least 1 other component of the Taskbar Tweaker is working, but I can’t say for sure the grouping is the only thing not working. What should I try next?

          • Could you provide a screenshot with your tweaker options, and with the taskbar? Perhaps it will help me reproduce the issue.

            • Crystal says:

Okay, I think I have figured out how to share the screenshot. Here goes:
              http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x153/hallfamilyreunion2007/TTscreenshot.jpg

              • It’s difficult to see this on the screenshot due to the fact that you’re using a classic theme, but you’re saying that the Firefox buttons are grouped, right? i.e. if you try to move one around, all three move?
Is it specific to Firefox? Try opening multiple instances of a different program, e.g. Notepad or Calculator. Are they grouped, too?

                • Crystal says:

Hey, I hadn’t thought of that. Do you think it could be the scheme I am using? So, to clarify, if I manually move the buttons around (for any application), they do separate, as before. The problem is that if I open a Word document, then a PowerPoint document, then another Word document, the windows rearrange themselves so that the Word documents are next to each other. This had been fixed by the TaskbarTweaker before the update. This is also the case for Firefox and Explorer. Hmm, I will try to change the schemes to see if that could be the issue. Thing is, I am using the same scheme as before the update. Hmm…

                  • I didn’t imply that the issue is caused by the theme, I’ve just said that it’s more difficult to see on the screenshot whether the buttons are grouped.

if I manually move the buttons around (for any application), they do separate, as before.

OK, that means that the “Don’t group” option works.

if I open a Word document, then a PowerPoint document, then another Word document, the windows rearrange themselves so that the Word documents are next to each other.

This is exactly what the “When not grouping, place new items next to the existing ones” option does. But it’s turned off on your screenshot. I’ll try to reproduce it. Unfortunately, I don’t have access to a computer with Windows 7 at the moment.

                  • I’ve just tried it on Windows 7, and couldn’t reproduce the issue.
                    http://i.snag.gy/QCwje.jpg

I’ve opened a window of Internet Explorer, moved it to the beginning, and opened a new window. It opened at the end, as expected.

                    • Crystal says:

Hi, RaMMicHaeL, thanks so much for the follow-up. I really appreciate your attempts to get this to work for me. I installed Taskbar Tweaker on a newer computer, and it worked as expected there, so I am thinking my computer is simply issue-prone because it is so old. Either way, many many thanks for an awesome product.

    And now, no features works.

  28. xdanielx52 says:

hey, in windows 7 there is an option called “always show icons, never thumbnails”, if enabled, it disable all thumbnails like image preview and folder preview, i only want to disable the preview on folder icons and not the preview on image files, is there a way to add this to 7+ Taskbar Tweaker?

  36. Oleg says:

Hi, thaks for your app. It’s the precious.
    I have several questions:

1)There is a modernization in the Win7 Explorer(compaing XP), that i want to suggest you to make a tweak for it in your app.
There is a details Pane(don’t miss with status bar) on the explorer window – at the bottom, that calculates the number of choosen files, their amount in kb, ets. It works fine for me, but when you choose more then 15-16 elements, all the infomation disapears, becomes hidden and a new button appears – details, and i have to click it to get all info displayed againg.
Can you make a tweak to disable this information disapearing after 16 elements???

    2) What languige do you use – Delphi or C++?

    3) Can you add the line in the options to run your app as service?

    4) Can you make a new tweak to make the taskbar’s and system tray’s height smaller – shrink it a little bit verticaly

    5) tray_clock_fix_width – works fine for one line taskbar, but it doesn’t work for two or three lines taskbar. Can you fix it?

    Waiting for your rpely

    • Hi Oleg,
      Thanks for your feedback.

      As for your questions:

      1) 7+ Taskbar Tweaker is about tweaking the taskbar. I don’t plan to add such a feature to it, and if I’ll ever get this implemented, it will most probably be in a separate application. Perhaps you’ll get more lucky with a program such as Classic Shell.

      2) Plain C.

      3) Why do you think it’s a good idea?
You can also read the following relevant discussion:
      http://rammichael.com/7-taskbar-twekaer-and-windows-8-1-update-1/comment-page-1#comment-3987

      4) What do you mean? Like, making it even smaller than its size with the “Use small taskbar buttons” option enabled?

      5) The bug only happens with a single line and small icons. It happens because Windows takes the date string length into account, while it’s in fact not visible. The date is visible in a multirow taskbar, so there’s no such bug.

      • Oleg says:

        4) Yes, with enabled Use small taskbar buttons” option, the taskbar is too high as for me. There is a lot of vertical space between the lines of icons in the system tray, between the time, day of week and date in the clock section and of course the buttons of open program are also too high.

If you tell me you email, i can send you the printscreen with details – what i mean.

  37. Chancha says:

This is a great tweak so far.
Can I make a small request?
I want to “hold right click and scroll” to “zoom in/out”.
Can you integrate this feature in your program?
    thank you,

  38. Jorge says:

    Hi Rammichael.

I’ve got your 4496 beta version installed and works everything ok except with
    the multi-desktop application named “Dexpot”.

When i change to a new desktop, application icons changes order in the taskbar. This issue didn’t happen before famous windows update.

    Thanks for your effort anyway.
    Jorge

  39. Jorge says:

    Hi,
When the tweaker is not running the problem continues to happen. But what i am certain is this issue didn’t happen before windows update. Maybe it is related with dexpot maybe not, i don’t know. I hope somebody finds out the solution. I love your tweaker to arrange icons in the taskbar, but i need dexpot for multi-desktop feature. I have tested a bunch of other multi-desktop and taskbar applications, but, with no luck.

    Thanks again.
    Jorge

  40. Hawkenstein says:

Excellent update, very many thanks, those stupid taskbar tooltips were driving me mad!

  41. dev says:

    Hi,

I have set the taskbar to the minimal width by manually adjusting it on Windows 8.1 update 1. But everyone I restart the PC the width resets to the default size. Is there a way to retain the original set width?
    Thanks.

    • Hi,

Please see the comments here, perhaps you’ll find a solution to your problem:
      http://tweaker.userecho.com/topic/433631-narrow-taskbar-no_width_limit-not-remembering-width-on-restart/

If not, please let me know.
Also, you’re aware that 7+ Taskbar Tweaker has to run at startup for the minimal width to be preserved, right?

      • dev says:

        Hi RaMMicHael,

        Thanks for the prompt reply!
It is set to run at Startup under Settings.

I checked the Registry, and I can’t find a Name entry for ‘last_taskbar_width’.
Can I create it myself without affecting the Registry?
If so, what are the values that I need for the Type and Data columns also?

I also tried installing as a portable installation, but again, it resets with each restart.

        Thanks heaps.
        Dev

        • Hi,

Can I create it myself without affecting the Registry?
If so, what are the values that I need for the Type and Data columns also?

          No, that won’t work.

Try to enlarge the taskbar, and then shrink it again. See whether the value appears.
I’ll try it myself on Windows 8.1 Update 1 when I have the chance.

        • Just tested it, works for me on Windows 8.1 Update 1. The width gets restored after restart, too.
          http://i.snag.gy/jth5z.jpg

Please provide your tweaker settings and taskbar properties, and I’ll try to reproduce it with your configuration.

          • Dev says:

            Hi there,

I uninstalled and reinstalled 7 Taskbar Tweaker both as a normal user and administrator. I set the no_width_limit under Advanced Options to 1 and then tweaked some of the the allowed taskbar setting using 7 Taskbar Tweaker and adjusted the taskbar to minimum width. I checked the Registry and could see last_taskbar_width after I resized the Taskbar.

However when I restart the PC Taskbar resets to the default setting. All other 7 Taskbar Tweaker settings take effect. Only this one doesn’t. Unfortunately this is the one I really want.

I have attached some screen captures. Sorry I had to take with phone camera as it is on my HTPC, and it doesn’t have a print screen button on the keyboard 🙁

Thanks for all the help trying to resolved this…

            • I couldn’t reproduce it with your options, too, but it looks like you have some non-standard preferences. The screenshots are not that great, but seems like you have a custom theme and cursors. Perhaps you can think what causes the incompatibility, e.g. are you using some configuration which might affect the size of the taskbar?

I’ve been using this for over a year now. It’s so incredibly handy, it makes me wonder why are these features not included in Windows to begin with… Anyway, thanks a lot, it definitely makes Windows much more convenient to use 😉

Can the “always on top” behavior be disabled for the Windows 8.1 Taskbar?

Hi! Is it possible to make colors when you mouse hover on working program stay permanent for all launched programs without hovering your mouse over them? It would be cool to better differentiate working programs. Something like this: http://i.stack.imgur.com/2wvYw.png

Hi, can you provide an alternative download link?
For the website version I still get a “forbidden access” message?

Hi, I have a concept that I think would be considerable.
It would seem handy to be able to drag taskbar items to the right side of the taskbar and they would be anchored to that side. It would keep things organized, but I can imagine some problems when there’s too much space being taken. Anyways, I bump into that thought a lot and was wondering what you think?

    Hi RaMMicHael,

I love that tool, however I have one question (and mabye this would be a request – if you are open for requests):

I work with two lines of the taskbar, because I always have a lot of windows open.
I think I remember when using windows xp, that all elements always had the same size. For example (no real numbers):
the taskbar is 2000px wide. Every window is 200px wide. that means there are 10 windows per line. now when I open the 11th window, it opens in the second row with 200px. This goes on until the 20th. The 21st window now squeezes all other windows together, they are now 180px wide, now there are 11 elements in the first row and 10 in the second. (Don’t mind the “dead space” of 20px here in the top row, it is just for example purpose)

but with windows 7 it currently behaves like this: It squeezes only the first row. so there are 11 elements in the first row with 180px each, and 10 in the second row with 200px. I don’t like that (maybe it’s OCD? I don’t know. But it is kinda weird…). It was even worse when there was still grouping, but since your tool fixes the grouping problem, I wonder if you could also fix that sizing issue. It would be nice if all elements in the taskbar could have the same size at all times, depending on how big they need to be to fit in two rows.

I hope you understand my issue and I would be even happier if there would be a way for you to implement this 🙂

    Thanks + Regards,
    Peter

    • Hi,

      Thanks for the feedback.

This was requested before, but it’s not as straightforward in the new (Windows 7 and up) taskbar.
There are items with different widths, such as pinned items, grouped items, combined items.

    • Hi again,

I’ve just implemented the requested option in the latest beta version of the tweaker. Please try it.

        Hi,

I had to find the option first, but then I found the advanced options in the context menu. And what do I say – it’s perfect. Exactly as I wanted it to be. Thank you so much for this. 🙂

        Best regards,
        Peter

Recently, I had the use of functions (Taskbar Inspector):
    Tile horizontally
    Tile vertically

The possibility of applying these functions on certain windows by choice, it’s amazing.
    Thank you very much.

If your antivirus has a positive hit on this:
Well then it obviously isn’t a very good one.
