7+ Taskbar Tweaker

7+ Taskbar Tweaker
7+ Taskbar Tweaker allows you to configure various aspects of the Windows taskbar.
Most of the configuration options it provides can’t be tweaked using the taskbar properties or the registry.
The tweaker is designed for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

Windows 11 Support Status

  • 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn’t support the Windows 11 taskbar, and probably never will. See this blog post for more details.
  • Some of the tweaks are available in Windows 11 as Windhawk mods. See here for the list of mods, and vote for missing mods that you’d like to see implemented. Read more about Windhawk here.
  • 7+ Taskbar Tweaker works on Windows 11 version 23H2 and older with the old taskbar which can be restored with third party tools. See this blog post for more details.

FAQ

Q: Which registry keys does 7+ Taskbar Tweaker modify? I don't need extra processes in my system.
A: The only registry keys the tweaker modifies are its own settings. There are no registry keys for the options it provides. The tweaker does that by injecting a DLL to explorer, hooking/subclassing/some other methods of the dark side.
As for extra processes, the tweaker is a native program, and is very lightweight. It shouldn’t slow down your system, and uses an extremely small amount of memory. Also, you can hide the tray icon if you want.

In case you want to remove the tweaker's settings from the registry, look for them here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\7 Taskbar Tweaker
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (7 Taskbar Tweaker value)

P.S. if you're a programmer, you might want to take a look at the 7+ Taskbar Tweaking Library.

Q: My antivirus complains about 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.
A: It's a false positive. I guarantee that the tweaker binaries (and any other files on this site, unless specifically noted) are 100% clean.
Also remember that the tweaker injects into explorer and modifies its memory, which is indeed suspicious.

Q: Can I Group/Combine/Label only some of the items on the taskbar?
A: Yes, use Taskbar Inspector.

Q: May I use 7+ Taskbar Tweaker in a commercial environment?
A: Yes, feel free to use it wherever you want.

Q: Where is the portable version?
A: When installing the tweaker, choose the Portable type of install, as shown on the image below.
The portable version will be extracted to the selected folder.

Selecting the portable installation type

Note: If the tweaker is already installed on your computer, the option won't be visible. You can launch the setup with the /portable command line switch to force a portable installation.

Q: I want to report a bug/suggest a feature! What is the best way to do it?
A: Post it on the UserEcho page.

Q: I want to translate 7+ Taskbar Tweaker to my language.
A: The archive below contains the files needed to be translated.
Please read readme.txt before proceeding.

    HELP!

    Windows 1803…..

  4. John Smith says:

As others have stated, Windows 10 came out with a new build today called 1803. The latest 7+ Taskbar Tweaker is not compatible with it yet, because it needs a new Library or whatever. I am looking forward to getting an 1803 compatible 7+ Taskbar Tweaker so I can resume using it again. I don’t like it when the icons stack. However, if you have a way to unstack the icons and have the labels hidden without using 7+ Taskbar Tweaker, please let me know. I could do it in Windows 8.1 by editing a registry key to make the Taskbar icons narrower. But in Windows 10, you can only edit the same registry key to make the icons wider (not narrower). Again, I hope you update your program to be compatible with Windows 10 1803, and I am also curious (send me an e-mail) how I can go about hiding the icon lables on unstacked icons without using 7+ Taskbar Tweaker. Thank you.

    • Unfortunately, I’m not aware of a way to accomplish this without the tweaker. See the first question of the FAQ on this page for more details.

    • OHu says:

      ==============

      I found a workaround:

Just use the mode with the letters for the task bar. Open all tasks you normally use for your work. Then install an individual symbol bar (with the shortcut of any program in it) right of it.

Unfix the task bar and move the symbol bar to the left until all letters have disappeared. Fix the task bar again.

Now you have (nearly) what you want. It works as long as you use the nearly same amount of open tasks. Else you have to readjust the position of the symbol bar.

  5. John Smith says:

Can you make a 7+ Taskbar Tweaker that won’t break even when new Creators Updates come out? I only ask because this is going to be a hassle to wait days or even weeks for an amended version of the program every time a Creators Update comes out. I read on your page that there are no registry tweaks to unstack Taskbar icons without showing the label. That is just incredibly sad. It’s been four years since Windows 10 came out, and they haven’t come out with a Creator’s Update that lets us do that again like we could in previous Windows versions? So we are stuck with a .dll that you created that no one else can recreate on their own? This really sucks. And then on top of that, we go without Taskbar Tweaker for days and weeks until you “update” your program. Please at least make it so that it will work even after a Creator Update. If you can do that, we can suffer less.

  6. vertigo says:

A couple thoughts for improvements to this amazing program:

Ability to export and import settings, including custom commands (advanced options)
Tray organization via folders, sorting, and/or some other means (I realize they can be sorted, but Windows sucks at keeping the order, such as when explorer.exe crashes)
Re-adding tray icons after an explorer crash

  7. BILL says:

Hello, I just downloaded Win 10 Ver 1803. Everything is working fine with the exception of the Tweaker which will no longer load because of a missing library. This applies when I try to install 5.4 or 5.4.0.2. Do you plan a fix for this problem?

    Thanks!

  8. John Smith says:

How do I unsubscribe from these “go make a donation” posts that these other users keep sending to me and my email? It’s spam and I am tired of it. You only have to ask or suggest that I make a donation ONCE. Not over and over and over again.

    • PSIKYO says:

That all because you have post improper comment.
Why don’t you think much deeper before you post?
Receiving e-mail about “DONATION” over and over again is the consequence of your greedy desire.

    • PunaJussi says:

You could leave the internet. Everybody wins.

  9. Dmitri says:

    Hello!
Didn’t you do any research about ShellIcon‌OverlayIdentifiers limitation of 15 items – is it possible to overcome this limit by modifying something in memory?
If so it would be great to have such a feature in your fantastic 7-taskbar-tweaker program!

  10. Plop says:

I’ll donate when your site supports https. It literally takes 10min to setup and it’s free. No excuses. The fact you’re being all stubborn about it for whatever stupid reason makes your whole project shady as hell.

In just a few months from now your Google ranking will take a huge hit and Chrome will tell everyone your site is insecure. Just do it now and be done with it? It won’t brake your site or kill a dozen kittens, promise.

    • John Smith says:

It’s spelled “break” not “brake”. You look like a native English speaker. The least you can do is lean how to spell simple, common words in your own language.

On a side note, you shouldn’t recommend that they switch to HTTPS. They will probably start spamming you with 3 or 4 “If you want HTTPS on this free site, don’t be greedy. Donate $10.” messages.

      • Plop says:

You look like a native English speaker.

Thanks, but I’m not. Doesn’t excuse the typo though.

They will probably start spamming you with 3 or 4 “If you want HTTPS on this free site, don’t be greedy.Donate $10.” messages.

And I probably would. I see nothing wrong with him pushing for donations.

    • Unfortunately that can’t be done in 10 minutes with the current setup. The fact that my hoster doesn’t support https means that I’d have to find a new hosting provider to get https support. The good news are that my hoster promises to add https support by the end of the month. Let’s hope that it’s indeed going to happen.

      • Plop says:

The fact that my hoster doesn’t support https

I hadn’t even considered such a silly thing… Good luck with your hoster, I’d just move if I were you.

Or you could open source and host everything on github for free 😉

        Ok I’m out

    • Cobra says:

Yeah, If you want google to track your every move, just use Chrome.
Why is https so important to you? There is no confidential information to enter anywhere.
When you click the donate button you are redirected to a secure paypal site anyway, so I don’t really see your problem, other than chrome complaining – who cares!

  11. ThankYou! 7+TaskbarTweaker says:

for me the most important features also besides7+taskbartweaker !do you should to Bring back to us OldTaskbarContextMenu, i dont like the new ui Windows interface on taskbar because buttons & letters are so big big big, too do you bring back an Oldclock and NetworkFlyout.

  12. argo says:

    About the taskbar.
I noticed there is a feature missing both in Windows native settings as in your Tweaker, and this is exactly what i was searching for…
Strange that anyone have had need or interest on that before, given that it would improve the desktop space.

In fact that Taskbar has those two options (1.hide automatically or 2. stay-on top) but lacks the important Third one: to be covered by other windows without being collapsed into the screen-edge.
The third option will offer: (i) no mouse movement required to find always the BAR already opened in the desktop background; (ii) all the screen’s surface usable without restrictions; (iii) the taskbar does not break any windows, when placed on the same side of an additional monitor.

I guess infact that with the longer monitors of today and their reduced height, the taskbar’s best location is generally on the side.

Please delete my previuos bad-written comment .
    Thank you.
    Regards

Taskbar covered by other windows (without being collapsed into the screen-edge) :::
See your local “7+ Taskbar Tweaker Help” file » Advanced options » OptionsEx » disable_topmost.

    • I’m not sure I completely understand your suggestion, but please take a look at the disable_topmost advanced option. It might be exactly what you’re looking for. Refer to the help file for more details.

  14. Twisted_Code says:

so… is compatibility with the April 2018 update on its way? Just updated automatically last night and now I can’t use my favorite 7TT features 🙁
How do people live without being able to see the seconds tick by on the system time?

  15. Poor boy says:

Please, update 7+ Taskbar Tweaker. I just need “Remove gap between items” for Windows 1803 SCU.

I can only donate with praying that you are always healthy.

  16. vertical_taskbar says:

While I appreciate the author’s work, and have been using it for a while now. Now that new windows update got pushed to everyone, but this app is still broken, and no way to get a working version without “donating”, the app essentially is a paid app since the windows 1803 update. Just calling out what it is.

The longer this goes on, the more people like me reconsider whether I need this app at all (& the slight risk it introduces malware or instability to the OS), or find a different workflow or solution.

    • sp4mmy says:

I wished the author would open-source the code. I think we’ll all benefit from this :
      • Less risks to get a malware.
      • More people would be working on the code which means faster updates.
Right now, he’s forced to make an update twice a year (following Win10 new versions), and each time we’re forced to live without the software for a few weeks.

I understand the author might not have the time to offer us an update quickly after each Win10 upgrade (though I don’t understand why the issue arising after each upgrade isn’t detected earlier with Insider versions), that’s why I think relying on a community of developers is far better for the future of the software.

Open-sourcing is not incompatible with donations.

      • Twisted_Code says:

He’s probably just scared his proprietary rights as the developer will be violated or something. While I generally prefer a copy left licensing model for any software I may develop now or in the future, I can still sort of relate, having seen what people do with, for instance, redistributing Minecraft mods without permission. Knowing someone claimed your work as their own (plagiarism) is the worst…

    • Parrotlover77 says:

It really makes me sad somebody works hard in their free time to provide excellent free software and frankly very timely updates and people still find a reason to complain.

You can pay anything and get alpha/beta releases forever or otherwise you can simply defer feature updates easily within Windows until 7TT gets updated, which is typically in only few weeks after release. Frankly, it’s a good idea to wait anyway because there are always some zero day bugs in Windows feature releases.

RaMMicHaeL has done excellent work here.

  17. Quetzal says:

hi, beautifull work, certainly not easy to perform…

i’m lucky it seem, i was using it on seven, and i’ve just pass on win10…

    it works well be there…

how to ask for a new feature, without to appaers too guzzler or hungry…

if you got the time… if you could think to add a little close button of each item/tabs of the taskbar… (just quicker way to close windows) (it’ll be welcome be there)

thank a lot… and i ‘ll go shake my bankster to sponsorised your work 😉

    • Hi Quetzal,

      Thanks for the feedback.

if you could think to add a little close button of each item/tabs of the taskbar…

It’s unlikely to be implemented, since it’s a feature which is difficult to do properly, with low gain. Currently you can configure the taskbar to close windows with the middle mouse button, as well as with any other combination (such as Ctrl+click) by using the tweaker’s advanced options.

      • Quetzal says:

hi, yep i’ve seen this option… but on a lap-top the well mouse is not so easy to perform simply… track pad could, but i’m affraid to closed instead to re-opened a tab…

        see ya

+1 for the broken situation with the new 1803 version of Windows 10

It will be superb if you fix this problem so we can use the 7+ tweaker again!

    Salut,

Hi, (sorry for any bad english, foreign poster here)

We’re a bunch of french people on the video game DOFUS (a fench low-cost MMORPG) waiting for the new release of the marvelous software Taskbar Tweaker 7+ (really changed our gamers life tbh) especially the window-of-a-same-program tweak in the taskbar (a very big problem in this multiple-windows game).

Is there any way that you could help us ? (any remedy ?)

You can contact me on my personal mail (which I believe you have access to) and I’ll try to answer as best as I can with my mediocre english skills.

    Yours sincerely,

(thanks for all the help in the previous versions my kind sir)

  21. Steven says:

All the tweaks I rely on are working in the Alpha release. Many thanks!

  22. Tom Martin says:

For those hoping to suppress thumbnails, be aware that in the latest Windows update (1803) it seems that the only way to reorder multiple instances of a program is via the thumbnails. In other words you can no longer directly move the tabs within a single program.

    • Tom Martin says:

Now I can’t reorder even with the thumbnails. It could be that this problem was caused by Winaero’s “disable thumbnail” feature, so maybe this won’t affect others.

      • Tom Martin says:

Checking the web, I see only one mention of this problem but from its description I doubt if Winaero’s tool was involved. And most likely I was mistaken about being able to rearrange via the thumbnails.

I think it’s just an 1803 software bug since I can’t find any mention of a change. Nothing I’ve tried in Settings has worked.

        • Tom Martin says:

I’ve now been told that this is actually an old deficiency in Windows, which the Tweaker has apparently been addressing for some time. Can anyone confirm this?

  23. Nick Foster says:

    Hello,

Yesterday (5.15.18) I updated to Windows 10 Pro Version 1803 (Build 17134.48). Since then, 7+ Taskbar Tweaker gives me the “This is an unsupported build of Windows” dialog box, and then crashes when I click “Yes” to launch (I believe the error code was 1004, I am unable to replicate it now). Just wanted to make you aware. I’ve used this software for years, and it works so well, so I hope you can update it. Cheers!

    Nick Foster

  24. Jason says:

Might be time to release the alpha as a beta. Sounds like everyone who has the alpha believes it to be working. Would probably alleviate all the frustration shown in the comments.

  25. Kevin Schneider says:

Windows update just installed 1803 (OS Build 17134.48) and now 7tt fails with could not load library(104)
    using 7tt version 5.2.1
any ideas on a fix, much appreciated.
    Thanks

    • sp4mmy says:

      Hi,

Check the other comments, already a lot of people have asked for an update. The developer has answered and said he’s working on a new version. An alpha for donators is available and seems to be working nice.

      • François says:

        @sp4mmy

Yes, “seems to”, but I got nothing after my donation, no reply, nor link to download the Alpha Version.

  26. Tom Martin says:

Sorry for this repost, but my original question was buried under three of my replies so I suspect it’s been overlooked (especially since it wasn’t totally clear).

I’m trying to determine whether the alpha version of the Tweaker allows you to resequence tabs within a single application. I’m all but certain the last version let us drag and drop them, but this is neither something Windows supports (as of 1803, anyway) or is documented anywhere in the Tweaker (although there are a couple similar features). So it’s an absolute mystery as to how it’s happening. I suspect an 1803 bug but MS support has walked away from the case I opened.

Although I’d like to know how it works, I’d be happy with just a yes/no on whether it works with 1803. I promise to happily donate if it does (or if you can get it working again).

    • or is documented anywhere in the Tweaker

That’s documented in the help file in:
Tweaks ›› Taskbar items ›› Thumbnails
See the “Drag to reorder” option.

Other options which allow to reorder items within a single group are:

      • “Drag within/between groups using right mouse button” under Tweaks ›› Grouping and combining ›› Grouping.
      • Dragging in the Taskbar Inspector.

It should have worked in the alpha version, and it works now in the latest version of the tweaker, 5.5.

  27. Nacho says:

Hi! can u release a new version for Win 10 1803? i cant live without middle click to close, and wheel to control volume. I dont have international credits cards to donate 🙁

Thank you so much for the new update v5.5 !

  33. Richard says:

New version 5.5 does not load library. The beta 5.9.4.3 just worked fine.
I’m on Win 10 1803 will all updates up to now.

  34. Richard says:

Version 5.5 is not working on Win10 1803 with all updates up to now, while alpha 5.4.9.3 did (which is rather strange). I don’t have the alpha installer anymore and the link for the download you sent me is dead. Where can I download the alpha version?

    • You can get the alpha version in the same location, it’s still available.
As for the error that you’re getting, can you please post the exact error message? Thanks.

      • Richard says:

The download link for the alpha version you sent me is not working. Luckily I found the alpha installer on my other computer.

After the auto-update to version 5.5 I got the same ‘cannot load library (102)’ message.

I just downloaded the 5.5 installer from the site to try again.
During the installation I get an error that states there are problems reading/writing inject.dll. The same error occurred after un-installing the existing version. Installing with administrator rights makes no difference either.
After restarting the computer the installation went flawless and the program also runs fine now.

  35. Christo says:

Thank you for a great program. For those who don’t like Windows updates. Just disable the service.

  36. Klas says:

For the download – only one link – there is nothing stated for whether it is a beta, alpha or the final version. I just clicked it and installed it and it works on the 1803 update now, but I have no idea if I’m running a beta or anything. Hope this makes sense, I’m tired. Thanks.

    • Alpha and beta versions have four-digit version numbers, e.g. 5.4.0.1. Two or three-digit versions, such as 5.5, are final versions.
You can also verify it in the about box or in the installer title – alpha/beta versions have (alpha)/(beta) near the program name and version number.

  37. Sean S says:

Thank you for updating this excellent util so promptly. Much appreciated.

  38. bruce says:

Quick question: I want to stop the preview of items in the Taskbar (next to the start button, also known as open windows or programs) .. I see the option to do this is 7 Taskbar but I need to know if I must allow the program to run at startup in order for this or other tweaks to work. Windows 10 is somewhat tolerable, but these twice yearly major feature updates are getting to be a pain in the butt.

  39. John Smith says:

This isn’t a feature request. I just have a question. Do you know of any way to make certain unpinned programs always open up at a certain location on the Taskbar? My Steam (game client) icon is in the middle of my Taskbar with other icons to the left and right of it. Whenever I launch an unpinned game from Steam, the new game’s icon will appear at the far right of all the other program icons on the Taskbar. Of course, I can fix this by pinning the new game sto where I want, but I don’t want to pin them because I want to save room. So I was wondering if there is a way to make unpinned Steam games appear right next to my Steam client icon instead of at the far right.

    • There’s no option that does exactly this, but you can come close if Steam launches the games by using their shortcuts. You can use win7appid to modify the games’ shortcut to have the same AppId as Steam. Then you can disable grouping for that AppId and use the “When not grouping, place new items next to the existing ones” option.
If Steam launches the games directly, that would be impossible with the current feature set of 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.

  40. Stamimail says:

Congratulations for the new version. 🙂
Why “drag_towards_desktop” can’t simply be added to “Mouse click event”?
The user will be able to use it also with Ctrl and Shift…

    • It can, but due to historical reasons it’s a separate advanced option. It was first introduced as an option in the main window, and just allowed to disable the jump list. Users requested to add more actions, so it moved to advanced options, getting more actions with time.

      • Stamimail says:

“historical reasons” – I can understand that.
But for this there is a “Major Update” – as a solution to make such changes in the software.
If not now, I don’t know when the next opportunity will be.

        • Maybe never 🙂
The ability to configure drag_towards_desktop with Ctrl/Shift is so niche that I don’t think more than five users (if any users at all) will use it. I don’t see it being worth the time to do the change, which includes adding a “do nothing” action. Also, it’s not worth the reset of users’ existing settings (it can be solved, but that would require even more development time).

          • Stamimail says:

I would not have deceived it,
if more commands will be added, like:
Hide a window or All group items.
Minimize to Tray a window or All group items.

By the way i like the your app!

  42. Alistair says:

Half an hour ago or so 7+TT went into a mad loop unless I disable checking for updates. It downloads the installer executable to temp, runs it and then a few seconds later does the same again. Filling temp with loads of copies of the installer.

I have always had “Update automatically” disabled but that’s what it looks like it’s doing anyway.

  43. Ky3 says:

I keep getting a bug where the program gets caught in a boot/crash loop.

  44. RobSanta says:

Something is still not quite right with this version.

In previous versions, I moved the desktop icon to another folder since my desktop was getting cluttered. That was never a problem. However, v5.5 keeps on putting it back, which is supremely annoying.
In the span of 10 minutes, 7+ tried to download and reinstall. Obviously, that should NOT be happening.

I didn’t get this file from a 3rd party site. I got it from here. I even ran it through a cursory VirusTotal online scan. By and large, it comes up clean. Tweaker still needs some, well, tweaking before it’s considered final. IMO.

I’ve uninstalled it for the time being, which is a shame because I’ve come to depend on it. Dang.

    FTR, my system specs are….

    MS Windows 10 v1803 (Build 17134.81)
    Intel Core i7 6700k 4GHz w/32GB RAM
    GeForce GTX 970
10TB HDD storage across a few drives

The only noteworthy memory resident apps I have are:

    Steam Client
    Adobe CC
    Logitech Gaming Software v8.98
Wacom drivers for my Intuos and Cintiq

    That’s it.

Maybe it is a transient and temporary error, but clicking on the changelog link attempts to download the executable. It is ignoring the ?changelog part

The new version works!!! I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am. I don’t know how I survived without seconds on the system clock, volume control on the taskbar, decombining buttons, double-click Task Manager, etc, etc, etc….

    You are a wizard!

I think I found another bug in 5.5, when you do a rightclick on taskbar, the explorer is crashing …

maybe I messed around too much … but the early alpha is working on latest Insider Preview 17677 just for nfo 🙂

  49. Lizard says:

could as well have been the whole explorer which was crashing … I discovered this also, when trying to rightclick something in explorer ….
