7+ Taskbar Tweaker

7+ Taskbar Tweaker
7+ Taskbar Tweaker allows you to configure various aspects of the Windows taskbar.
Most of the configuration options it provides can’t be tweaked using the taskbar properties or the registry.
The tweaker is designed for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

Windows 11 Support Status

  • 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn’t support the Windows 11 taskbar, and probably never will. See this blog post for more details.
  • Some of the tweaks are available in Windows 11 as Windhawk mods. See here for the list of mods, and vote for missing mods that you’d like to see implemented. Read more about Windhawk here.
  • 7+ Taskbar Tweaker works on Windows 11 with the old taskbar which can be restored with third party tools. See this blog post for more details.

FAQ

Q: Which registry keys does 7+ Taskbar Tweaker modify? I don’t need extra processes in my system.
A: The only registry keys the tweaker modifies are its own settings. There are no registry keys for the options it provides. The tweaker does that by injecting a DLL to explorer, hooking/subclassing/some other methods of the dark side.
As for extra processes, the tweaker is a native program, and is very lightweight. It shouldn’t slow down your system, and uses an extremely small amount of memory. Also, you can hide the tray icon if you want.

In case you want to remove the tweaker’s settings from the registry, look for them here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\7 Taskbar Tweaker
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (“7 Taskbar Tweaker” value)

P.S. if you’re a programmer, you might want to take a look at the 7+ Taskbar Tweaking Library.

Q: My antivirus complains about 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.
A: It’s a false positive. I guarantee that the tweaker binaries (and any other files on this site, unless specifically noted) are 100% clean.
Also remember that the tweaker injects into explorer and modifies its memory, which is indeed suspicious.

Q: Can I Group/Combine/Label only some of the items on the taskbar?
A: Yes, use Taskbar Inspector.

Q: May I use 7+ Taskbar Tweaker in a commercial environment?
A: Yes, feel free to use it wherever you want.

Q: Where is the portable version?
A: When installing the tweaker, choose the Portable type of install, as shown on the image below.
The portable version will be extracted to the selected folder.

Selecting the portable installation type

Note: If the tweaker is already installed on your computer, the option won’t be visible. You can launch the setup with the /portable command line switch to force a portable installation.

Q: I want to report a bug/suggest a feature! What is the best way to do it?
A: Post it on the UserEcho page.

Q: I want to translate 7+ Taskbar Tweaker to my language.
A: The archive below contains the files needed to be translated.
Please read readme.txt before proceeding.

  5. Beppe says:

    Hi,
It looks like the latest version contains a virus (ALEXA51 as revealed by AVAST during installation). Windows10 won’t download the executable either…
Any comments would be appreciated since I have also paid a license for business use.
    Thanks,
    Regards,
    Beppe

    • Hi Beppe,
I don’t see it being detected by Avast on VirusTotal. See also my reply here.
As for a license, 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn’t require, nor it has the option for a license for business use. It’s a freeware/donationware program which can be used for free, with an option to donate to contribute to the development.

  6. Beppe says:

    Hi,
I reinstalled once again the beta version despite virus alert from Avast. I trust you. 🙂 Anyhow I didn’t get such alert at work.
Thanks for your quick reply. Appreciated.

  7. Tammy says:

v5.8.0 no longer works with Windows 10 for me on my work laptop, and I’m trying to install the beta version with no luck. Our virus scanner deletes the exe with a message that it detected a Trojan named Artemis!C4388D60B40D. Artemis is the name McAfee Labs gives to unknown, possible risks. There is no way to turn off the scanner. 🙁

Great tool! Anything on the Notifications widget?

I recently was asked by my boss to stop the “Windows notifications” on our conference room PC. I realized it’s easy to do for 1 user but seemingly impossible for all users. I was hoping 7+ Taskbar Tweaker would have an option to just hide the entire feature. Any chance you can pop that into the code by say Friday? Thanks!

    • By Friday? Looks like I’m already late 🙂
If Windows provides an option for this, I believe you can find a way to push it to all users, depending on the way you manage them. If you’re able to configure 7+ Taskbar Tweaker for all users, it sounds like you are in total control over the users’ profiles and files.

      • KC says:

I did find a local Group Policy:

(User configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\Remove Notifications and Action Center)

…that fully suppresses the notifications section entirely.

        Thanks,
        K.C.

  9. JC says:

    Hi,

I have Windows 10 Pro version 18362.418 and after it got updated to this version around 2 weeks ago the Taskbar stopped working with the error:

7+ Taskbar Tweaker: Could not load library (102)
The library version doesn’t match. Try to reinstall the tweaker

The tweaker opens and my settings are there but it doesn’t have any effect on the windows taskbar. I tried installing both my old version and the most recent beta version and the installer has an error that reads:

    Error opening file for writing:

    D:Program Files/7+ Taskbar Tweaker/inject.dll

Click Abort to stop the installation, Retry to try again or Ignore to skip this file

I did try re-installing in Administrator mode but the same error appears.

  10. Deandra Neretlis says:

Hi, I have recently updated my Windows 10 (as it won’t allow me never to update, which is incredibly frustrating) and upon the update, my 7+ taskbar tweaker is no longer working to make the changes I have selected in it. I mainly use this so I am able to drag grouped taskbars within each other as I often have to rearrange the order my Word documents appear to me in. It looks like the settings are there, but they aren’t working. I click Taskbar inspector, and it says “Not injected into explorer”. I have looked it up under reg edit and I’m not sure if there is any data in there that I need to change in order to get the taskbar to work again. If you can help me with this that would be great as it is beginning to frustrate me that I cannot find any information about how to reenable this or about how to get it to work again.

    • Hi Deandra,
First, you probably get an error message when 7+ Taskbar Tweaker launches. What does the message say?
Second, it’s possible that you’re not using the latest version of the tweaker. Please check that. If you didn’t disable automatic updates, you can just right click on the tweaker’s tray icon and choose “Update”.

      • Deandra Neretlis says:

I think I got a message about it once at startup, but I didn’t read through it clearly. It’s okay though, I did need to update and it’s working again! Thanks so much for the speedy response! I’m glad there was an easy fix and this program gets updated regularly! I’ll set it to automatically update now 🙂

  11. Alan Jones says:

The error message I am getting after the windows update is:

7+ Taskbar Tweaker: Could not load library (5)
Library initialization failed, perhaps your Windows version is not supported.

I use a corporate laptop and security is pretty strict on it. They use Avecto which has stripped me from doing pretty much any registry editing and software and update install/uninstall. Thankfully this programme is a desktop install so I don’t face issues with install but this error message is making any changes to the taskbar settings redundant and enforces MS settings

  12. Elad says:

    Hi,

I also encounter the issue with “Could not load library (5)”
I’m using Windows 10 Enterprise version 1709 (OS build 16299.1508)
I tried download the Beta version as other users reported it solved the problem but McAfee deletes it immediately (there is no problem with the non-Beta version)

I can send McAfee details in a screenshot if there is a way to attach image.

    Thanks,
    Elad

  13. Naveen says:

    Please help.

  14. PverUxer says:

I’ve selected the option “Remove extra gap between items”.
It does work with icons pinned to the taskbar.
When executing a pinned or not pinned program, the gap is there again.

Look at the picture (zoom in if you can’t see)
    https://www1.xup.in/tn/2019_11/11479583.jpeg

Is it possible to remove the gap while the executed state?

    • The detections are false positive. Feel free to report to the support team of the AV vendors.

      • rob says:

Could you please shed some light on what might trigger false positives? Do you think a win10 only version could clean up some of the code that gets wrongly detected?

Your tool is indispensable and I thank you so much for it, but I’d pay good money if the binary was hosted on github or some other nobrainer secure place. It’s not enough to trust a single dev (i really do), your site is surrounded by too many hostile actors and I’ve never been comfortable downloading binaries from here (I’m the one who harassed you to implement TLS :P)

        • what might trigger false positives?

Several factors. One thing that the tweaker injects code into the explorer process. Process injection is commonly used by malware, so this can be a red flag for an antivirus. Another thing is popularity. Beta versions always have more false positives. Now it’s ten versus three. I’d assume that more users cause the program to be logged more often in the antiviruses’ logs, and so that causes them to check it and remove the false positive. Probably people also report more about it. More sites link to it, too (like Softpedia and similar), so that might affect detections too. One other thing that might affect detections is a digital signature. The tweaker is not signed – I don’t bother to pay for a digital signature for this free project. It might have, or might have not, reduced the rate of false positives.

See also Nir Sofer’s blog post, Antivirus companies cause a big headache to small developers, a good write-up about the problem.

I’d pay good money if the binary was hosted on github

I’m not sure how it’s better or more secure. My website can be hacked (never happened so far), but so can be my GitHub account, or any other account.

If you’re interested in sponsoring a digital signature ($70 a year), I can add one, but as I said I’m not sure it’s going to help. It would surely help if I could sign my tool with e.g. a Microsoft signature, but obviously I can’t 🙂

your site is surrounded by too many hostile actors

What do you mean by that?

  15. Devon says:

Suggestion for “Left click on combined item” option:

“Open first window, otherwise open thumbnail preview”.

For instance if you have two chrome windows open, the first left click would always select the one first in the order (farthest to the left). This would work very well for me in conjunction with the “drag to reorder” thumbnails option, lets me choose which one i want to get to in one click.

    Thanks! I love this tool!

  16. JackB says:

Running v5.8. I cannot access the advanced options menus. When I right click, nothing happens. I want to increase the size of the taskbar icons. Please help.

    Hi,

I’ve been using TT for years, first with Win 7 x64, then with Win 10 x64. After the latest Win upgrade (Version is now 10.0.18363) I keep getting an error (warning) message I never got before and TT is not working anymore.

  18. Mike says:

    Hi,

Please disregrad my last message. I downloaded now the last version again (it’s different from the one I dwnld last month because it has a different size) and it seems to be working. If the warning message pops up again at startup, I’ll post a message.

    Regards,

    Mike

My man, I got to tell you, all your software are amazing, I’ve been using them for a long time and they always works great. You got some great utilities here, I sincerely thank you.

  20. Ryan says:

    Hey,

I installed the 7+ TT on my work laptop, and yesterday Windows 10 updates were forced upon me. The updates were KB4523202 and KB4525241 Since yesterday, my TT gives me an error “7+ Taskbar Tweaker: Could not load library (5). Library initialization failed, perhaps your Windows version is not supported.”

I’ve tried uninstalling and re-installing TT version 5.8, but the error persists. Please can you help?

    Thanks and kind regards,

    Ryan

    Hi,
This is absolutely best tool for Win10. Do you think you can maybe add possibility to show date in Taskbar? I’m missing is as I’m using “small buttons” and don’t see date. Thx.

  22. Erimus says:

I have a very wide monitor, about 1 meter width. And is it anyway to align the taskbar contents to center? Just as Mac’s dock. Please consider about this featrue.

    Hi,

I use (very, very often) the feature “Middle click on empty space > Show desktop”.

I just noticed that when the Start menu is open, this middle click doesn’t work.

By any chance, would you be able to fix this?

    I’m on Windows 10 version 1909.

Why not? Are you getting an error message?

      But I really like win10_large_icon
      (但是我很喜欢win10_large_icon这个功能)

Excuse me, is there any other way to achieve this goal?
      (请问我有别的方法达到这个目的吗)

There’s a paid program which provides a similar option. See the second answer here.

  25. Izzy says:

    Hi!

For the option (w10_large_icons), does it only increase the size of the taskbar icons once? Is it possible to increase the size of the icons anymore?

    Thanks!

  26. Hef Le says:

FWIW, I’m on Win10 version 1909, and also have Ditto 3.22.20.00 32bit running during startup.

  27. Eric says:

Does anyone knows any other method of opening pinned taskbar items with a double click instead of a single one? This is mainly the only function 7+ Taskbar Tweaker function that I use. I keep constantly opening the wrong program, and I’m really missing, since I update windows to the newer version

  28. poorboy says:

The latest beta does not fully function with the latest round of Windows updates for Windows Server 2019

I get “could not load library” when I try to run it

    https://i.imgur.com/0iUTul6.png

    • That’s quite strange, 108 is an error that I wouldn’t expect to happen on any Windows version. Do you have any other customization software on your computer that might conflict with the tweaker?

If no, I’d have a difficult time troubleshooting the issue. I can try installing the exact same Windows version and try to reproduce the issue on my end, but I’m reluctant to do so, and you’re the only user so far to report about this issue, so I still suspect it’s an issue specific to your setup. Another thing we can try – I can create a debug version of the tweaker with verbose logging and try to find out why the issue occurs.

      • SL says:

I also get the “could not load library error 108” after some company-mandated update. I’m on Win 10 Enterprise version 1909, OS build 18363.535

I tried both the beta and non-beta versions, and both are killed shortly after 7tt opens, with the accompanying error message. This started a few days ago – after I had a forced restart for an update, so it seems the update may be the problem.

Thanks for a fantastic program! I’m dying without it…

        • I’d like to look at it, but unfortunately I don’t have enough information to reproduce the issue.

Can you try to find which update caused the issue? If you could uninstall it and verify that it fixes the issue, that would be great (you can re-install it afterwards).

          • SL says:

Unfortunately my updates are under company control, so I can’t do a rollback – however, we recently got more mandatory updates applied, and the issue now seems to be fixed.

Fingers crossed that it stays that way—thank you very much for the reply, and for the excellent 7tt!

  29. Stephan says:

Does the tweaker do any logging that I can use to figure out why it immediately shuts down upon launch?

I have a suspicion it’s my company’s SentinelOne software, but they’ve told me that they’ve allowed the tweaker through – it still is killed a half second after launch.

    • No. It’s tricky to do logging if you’re being killed. Maybe you can try following this guide to see why the process is being killed:
      https://bugslasher.net/2011/04/17/who-the-hell-killed-my-process/

      • Stephan says:

I should have done a search before I asked – I actually followed these steps and got the tweaker working by loading the application in the debugger (used the WinDbg Preview from the Windows Store).

If I run it normally, it still crashes. Super weird & I’m unable to confirm what is killing it (since it WORKS when loaded via the debugger).

I don’t know much about this stuff but I suspect SentinelOne is still the culprit, but is unable (or unwilling) to kill processes executed by Windows itself, or the process launch is masked by the WinDbg tool (seems like a security vulnerability for SentinelOne, actually…).

        • I actually followed these steps and got the tweaker working by loading the application in the debugger

Did you try using GFlags as described in the guide?

seems like a security vulnerability for SentinelOne, actually…

          Yeah, possibly. Interesting…

        • Slug says:

Thanks a lot! You saved me a lot of headache by providing the possibility of this method of running, by running it via the debugger. Unfortunately, I wanted to run this with the headless version of Windbg(so there are no additional windows, and I can run 7tt from a shortcut), the ‘cdb.exe’. That still fails(SentinelOne deletes the shortcut!). Still ‘windbg -g 7tt.exe’ work well, with the minor annoyance of the command window at startup, which can still be closed, once it loads. Thanks again!

      • Stephan says:

Also – the executable for 7TT is deleted upon the crash. Again, more evidence SentinelOne is the issue :(.

  31. Ivan says:

Is there a way to use different settings on a per monitor basis?
Yes, I know there are programs such as displayfusion (i’ve bought that) and ultramon, but both are laggy for me (due to various reasons).

For example, on my first monitor i want the icons to ‘combine’ in the taskbar, but on my other 2 i don’t want that.

  34. John says:

I’ve used your tool for many years now and love it, however on my workstation which sadly uses W10, as soon as I pass 8 hours of run time 7+ slams the CPU or something and basically breaks the whole PC. The only fix is to close 7+, if I can even get task manager to load that is, or just force shutdown. It is very strange… have you seen this before?

  35. Fyaasko says:

Thankyou so much for continuing to let us retain a fast, responsive, and muscle memory known Rightclick->couple pixels over->Close.. And not windows’ bullcrap laggy and repositioned menu.

  36. Marco says:

I’ve been using this for many years without issue, however recently I have noticed that it no longer applies its tweaks at Windows start-up, and I have to manually open the tweaker and change a setting for it to activate the tweaks.

    I use Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 (1809) and I’ve tried v5.8 and v5.8.0.3 of Taskbar Tweaker.

As I’ve had no problems before, I wonder if it’s a recent Windows Update which has caused this. Do you have any ideas what might be causing this?

Thanks for your continued work on this excellent tool.

    • So, as far as I understand, it works, but only if you run it manually? And the settings aren’t saved, right?

It sounds like it’s something specific to your PC configuration. Perhaps a security software prevents from the tweaker to set itself to startup and to save its settings, or just resets those changes after a reboot.

You can try using the portable version (see the FAQ above). It keeps its settings in a local file, so that might solve the issue.

Setting the program to run at startup might be impossible if the system doesn’t allow it. You can try an alternative way such as placing a shortcut to the tweaker in the Startup folder.

  37. Daniel says:

I am also getting that “could not load library” bug on my work pc since a couple of updates went through on Monday. I haven’t been able to try the beta because download of EXE is blocked.

  38. Daniel says:

  39. Tony Booth says:

    • Sounds like what the “Don’t group pinned items” option does. Is it enabled?
If not, please post screenshots to clarify what you mean: A screenshot of the taskbar with 7+ Taskbar Tweaker, a screenshot without, and a screenshot of your tweaker window to see which options you have enabled.

      • Tony says:

Thanks for your very prompt response.

I uninstalled 7+TT and did a step by step process taking screenshots at each step but when I reinstalled 7+TT everything worked fine and I could not recreate the problem.

So for the moment I am happy. Will contact you again if the issue re-occurs. Thanks for the help.

  42. Richard says:

    Hi

Is it possible to include another option for the taskbar?

In Win XP whenever one dragged items to the taskbar for a second or two, all of the maximized windows would minimize, showing the desktop. Then one could let go of their mouse button and release whatever file or folder one was holding onto, and copy/move it to the desktop.

Yes one can do this same thing by dragging their file and folder to the minimize square, wait for all windows to minimize and then move their mouse to the desktop and release their content there. But I got used to just going straight to the empty area of a taskbar for this kind of minimization.

    • Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion. Currently 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn’t provide such flexible configuration options to the taskbar clock, not for setting a custom date format (relevant topic), and not for other visuals such as the distance between lines.
I’ll keep your suggestion in mind.

  45. SharkyEXE says:

    RaMMicHaeL

    Hello

However, The t-Clock program has reduced the distance between rows.
    What makes Your program worse?
Why can’t you make the line spacing option in your program if you want to?
    Thank You!

    • Hi,

As far as I know, T-Clock uses a different approach – it replaces the clock with a custom control, and that allows it to easily control every aspect of this control. That’s why it can provide so fine grained customization.

7+ Taskbar Tweaker, on the other hand, provides small tweaks to the taskbar while maintaining the original implementation of all aspects of the taskbar. The line spacing that you describe can probably be implemented in 7+ Taskbar Tweaker as well, but I’ll need to understand how it’s controlled by the current explorer’s code. Currently it’s not implemented.

RaMMicHaeL is it possible to add a functionality to the taskbar which Win XP had, but which is gone from Win 7. Namely when one grabs a file/folder (from any window) and hovers over the taskbar without letting go of the mouse buttons, all of the open windows minimize revealing the desktop, so that one can copy/move the files to it.

I know we can already do this by aiming at the far right little box on the taskbar, I’d just like to continue using my Win XP motion, as it doesn’t require for one to aim precisely at that little box.

    • Somebody named Richard asked about this a couple of days ago. Wasn’t that you? See my answer here:

Ah that’s splendid. Thank you! As I hid the tray icon (I like things neat) I was completely unaware of the advanced settings. With these now I can finally say: this is one powerful app! Well done on the design bro, that’s real brains!

I see the help file says “It can be opened from the tray icon right click menu, or from the main window’s system menu.”

Wouldn’t it be more visible to just plonk an “Advanced Settings” button on the main window, alongside the “Taskbar Inspector” button?

Now, if we could only manipulate the font and font size in taskbar/quick launch menu, that would be perfect.

Btw, that guy up top, that was my evil twin brother. 😉

It would, but currently there’s no button, that’s how it evolved. Maybe it will change one day 🙂

i’m having problem ” “Could not load library (5)” with windows 10 version 20h1 v.2004.19041.21

    • Hi Fouad,

      windows 10 version 20h1 v.2004.19041.21

That’s an insider build of Windows 10, and the tweaker has experimental support for it.

Experimental support for new Windows builds requires using the beta version and having an access code. Are you running the beta version with an access code? You can get more information here, and get a code here. Alternatively you can wait until a non-beta tweaker version is released with Windows 10 20H1 support, not before the stable, non-insider version of Windows 10 20H1 is released.

I just found your product. Very useful.

There is something else that I hope you’re familiar with and can advise or perhaps consider adding to 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.

I have a PC with two monitors. I keep my taskbar height set to two rows. About 95% of the time, or 19 of 20 times, after I restart, my primary monitor’s task bar resets to one row, so I have to unlock the taskbar, drag it up, and re-lock it.

Is there a way to prevent this behavior? I’ve searched the interwebs and found nothing.

    Thanks!

Hi there. Been using this for a while now. Love it. I wish stupid MS could implement these functions in their FUBAR GUI somewhere…

    But, that’ll never happen.

Anyways, I’d like to suggest that you put the version number on the webpage, but in particular the file name so that one don’t have to do this manually – The whole process of saving, checking properties, copying the version number, renaming the file… All that, when you could just put the version in the file name. Small request, big relief.

Thanks for a great util that saves many strands of hair!

    • Hi,

I’d like to suggest that you put the version number on the webpage

I did that a while ago after somebody asked me about it. It’s below the download link.

in particular the file name so that one don’t have to do this manually

It can be nice to have the version number in the file name at times. On the other hand, for other cases it’s more handy to have the file name constant. For example, the Chocolatey installation script uses the one existing URL to download the latest version. The tweaker itself uses the URL for auto-updating. Perhaps others depend on it too.

A workaround can be done, for example having 7tt_setup.exe redirect to 7tt_setup-5.8.exe or something. But it might affect existing usage as well. And the tweaker itself and the website will have to be adjusted for this.

For now, I’m going to leave it as is, but I’ll keep your suggestion in mind.
