7+ Taskbar Tweaker allows you to configure various aspects of the Windows taskbar.
Most of the configuration options it provides can’t be tweaked using the taskbar properties or the registry.
The tweaker is designed for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

Windows 11 Support Status
- 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn’t support the Windows 11 taskbar, and probably never will. See this blog post for more details.

FAQ
Q: Which registry keys does 7+ Taskbar Tweaker modify? I don't need extra processes in my system.
A: The only registry keys the tweaker modifies are its own settings. There are no registry keys for the options it provides. The tweaker does that by injecting a DLL to explorer, hooking/subclassing/some other methods of the dark side.
As for extra processes, the tweaker is a native program, and is very lightweight. It shouldn’t slow down your system, and uses an extremely small amount of memory. Also, you can hide the tray icon if you want.

Q: My antivirus complains about 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.
A: It's a false positive. I guarantee that the tweaker binaries (and any other files on this site, unless specifically noted) are 100% clean.
Also remember that the tweaker injects into explorer and modifies its memory, which is indeed suspicious.

Couple of ideas
Option to relocate show desktop button to the other end of the taskbar.
Option to add the Recycle Bin to the task bar – I’ve tried various ‘kludges’, but they don’t work for me, functionally or aesthetically. I would like to get it off my desktop and into the task bar, with the exactly the SAME functionality as it has on the desktop, but without the much of the functionality of a regular task bar item.
I just noticed that 7TT+ now ships a CHM – well done, I wish others would do the same.

I see the new version has the option to display seconds in the tray clock. Since MS didn’t add it all these years I’m wondering if it causes a performance hit constantly updating the tray? Does the seconds field keep getting updated even when the tray is not visible, such as when the taskbar is hidden or a full-screen program is running? I know the program is very light otherwise, but just want to know if there are any disadvantages you know of to enabling the seconds display option.
Thanks for a fantastic program and the only options I’d like to see are the taskbar button numbering feature from your other utility combined into this so only one program can do it all, and the ability to auto save/load the state of the Taskbar Inspector so custom grouping can be accomplished quickly without manually repeating the same steps every time with the same set of programs.
Theoretically yes, after all it updates the clock every second instead of every minute.
I don’t think it would significantly affect performance on modern PCs, though.

Seems like the clock updates even when a fullscreen app is open. That’s how the taskbar works.

Just a suggestion for an update to existing functionality. Re behaviour when closing taskbar items from 7++.
Please compare:
1. Open and edit a document.
2. Focus another application on top.
3a. Close with middle button (or other tweaker shortcut?)
vs
3b. Close with right-click on taskbar item then with red x button.
3b brings application into focus prompting to save. 3a application is still hidden. 3a should match 3b?
This would make things much easier.

I would like to have this options for win7.
– separate by category (with tabs for example) settings window
– thumbnails preview resize slider (i know that is simple registry trick and I hope you do not believe that combinating similar option in one heap is lead into the bloatware)
– control for delay before thumbs preview activating (and and before hiding separetely)
– the ability to use 2-3 row for taskb items (or columns because my taskb is vertical)
– control for delay before taskb autohiding and before showing (or size of “toggling” zone)
– abillity to change place of startbutton and tray (i think its fantastic, but your like the Wishmaster)
– abillity to change tray icons size
– abillity to run custom commands with mouse buttons control
I can not think up anything else right off the bat, but I hope that you are might be interested some of these suggestions.

I have a suggestion. I’ve noticed that when I hold Alt + Tab or the Windows Key + Tab, the order of the windows in the tabbed menu are not in the same order that they appear on my taskbar. Therefore, if possible, it would be great if you could also make the order of the windows in the tabbed menu also appear in the same order that they do on the taskbar.

When I right-click the tray icon the options don’t have any underlined keys or keyboard accelerators defines, so for example I can’t right-click and quickly press ‘x’ to Exit. Can you add those in the next release?
Also, some keyboard shortcuts while in the program for things like quickly launching the Taskbar Inspector should be there I think. Something like Ctrl+T or maybe a function key will be really helpful.

There are better methods to open Taskbar Inspector, though, e.g.:
* Middle or double clicking the empty space of the taskbar.
* Left clicking the tray icon.
* And since v4.2.5, using a custom keyboard shortcut.

Have you ever considered accommodating users with multiple monitors by allowing 7+ Taskbar Tweaker to extend the taskbar to another monitor? If not, could you suggest any software that provides this functionality which would be compatible with yours?
Thanks for all the work you’ve done, this is one of the most actively updated, smoothest performing pieces of freeware I’ve ever used! Regardless of whether you decide to support multiple monitors I will be donating.
Adding multimonitor support is not as easy as “extending the taskbar to another monitor”.
Explorer was written with a single taskbar for a single monitor in mind, and making it work otherwise will require a lot of effort.
Most (all?) programs that provide extra taskbars for a multimonitor environment actually use a clone of the original taskbar, which only looks the same. And of course, the tweaker cannot work with these.
P.S. the above text applies to Windows 7. Windows 8 provides multiple taskbars for a multimonitor environment, and the tweaker can work with these.

I have one other suggestion– I love the way the program updates; it’s nearly seamless, and the changelog is great! However, I tend to reorganize my Start Menu into categories and updates to 7+ Taskbar Tweaker will recreate the Start Menu folder in the top level of All Programs. Would it be possible for 7+ Taskbar Tweaker to first check if the default Start Menu folder exists or not before adding entries to the Start Menu?

The setup creates the start menu shortcuts because you chose to do so the first time you ran it.
Checking for the folder and not updating the files if it exists seems like a bad idea to me, because they might be e.g. accidentally deleted or corrupt.
You can do one of the following:
* Uninstall the tweaker, and reinstall it with the Start Menu Shortcuts option unchecked. Settings will be kept unless you check the option to remove them.
* Change the behavior in the registry.

I’ve noticed that, while most functionality works on secondary monitors, “Combine grouped buttons” in the Combining section does not. At least for me. I’m using Windows 10.
Is this a known issue, or just me? If the former, are you able to add/repair that functionality?

Could you please consider making 7+TT compatible with Realtime Soft UltraMon (www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon)? The ‘Smart Taskbar’ on the other monitors don’t use the 7+TT settings.

UltraMon uses a custom implementation of the taskbar, which I don’t plan to support.

Sure, I can hook their taskbar, but that would require a lot of work. A much more logical solution is for them to add an option to close items with a middle click.
UltraMon is not the only multimonitor software, I can’t support them all. I do support the native multiple taskbars on Windows 8, though.
Where does it store the Taskbar Inspector settings? Installed a new OS and I’d like to keep the changes I did.

Being a Windows API fanatic, I have to ask: How exactly did you accomplish these? I know you mentioned that you played around with Explorer’s internals, but which parts specifically? For example, the Taskbar Inspector lists everything, and as far as I know, there’s no documented way to do that unless you count that CodeProject article. Another example is removing the gap between pinned icons.
I haven’t seen most of this stuff anywhere, and it would be great to play around with some of it for myself, even if it is undocumented and unreliable.

This article is relevant for Windows Vista and below, where the taskbar is based on the toolbar control. In Windows 7 and up, the task list is rewritten to use a custom control, which doesn’t have a public interface.
The tweaker injects a DLL into explorer, which reads it’s internal structures. There are no undocumented messages/functions it uses for the purpose.
This option uses a dirty hack.
The taskbar basically has three types of items: 1 – regular, 2 – pinned, 3 – combined.
The tweaker hooks the function which calculates the sizes and positions of the items, and temporary replaces the type of pinned items from 2 to 4. Explorer considers type 4 to be narrower.
Although explorer has some code which handles type 4, I’m not sure whether it really exists, or if it’s a leftover code or something.
In any case, it works 🙂
Yes, I did mean that article. I wasn’t aware of the Windows 7 changes. I should start doing some work on playing around with the taskbar. I find it to be one of the more interesting parts to program, and I usually do that in an environment with XP, not my laptop. Thanks for the information.
Actually, I do have one suggestion:
When using the “Decombine –> On mouse hover” option, could you make it so that it keeps them decombined until the mouse leaves the taskbar (and possibly any open thumbnails)?
This has two benefits as I see it:
1. Say you decombine three windows that are in the first spot on your taskbar. When moving the mouse to the right to select another program, all of them suddenly shift left when leaving the first.
2. I find myself accidentally leaving the area taken by the decombined windows quite often, whether I go left a bit and end up on the start orb, or a bit past the last window in the group, causing them all to disappear.
It’s a great feature (it solves the problem I have with grouping them in the first place), but I think it would be even better if it didn’t revert until you’re done doing things on the taskbar.
That’s a valid argument. But on the other hand, if the task list is crowded, such behavior won’t be very helpful – items will shrink more as you decombine more groups, and might even move to a second row/page.
You might want to use “decombine active window” too, so that you could make the desired window active to prevent decombining when the cursor moves away.

Read the FAQ above.
The only command line switch the tweaker supports is -hidewnd, which starts the tweaker with the main window hidden. It’s mentioned in the help file.

Because you already have this “Hovering” option there can you add a feature there which allows users to bring-to front those software which are pinned and running in taskbar?
So users could open running software only by hovering its taskbar icon.

What’s wrong with simply clicking?
Does this program help lock the width of a toolbar? I have windows 8 and recreated quick launch successfully but even though I have five icons it resizes it to only show 2 every time I start windows. I’m looking for a way to stop windows doing this because I’m getting tired of resizing it every single time I boot windows.

No, it doesn’t have such an option.
Quick launch is kind of deprecated in Windows 7 and up, have you considered using pinned items instead?
When middle-clicking to close taskbar items, can you make 7TT focus the window in question before sending the terminate command? This way, when closing an unsaved document, the “Would you like to save before exiting?” dialog will have keyboard focus, thereby providing the same functionality as hitting the close button.

Using v4.2.5, it doesn’t work with Sublime Text 2, Visual Studio 2012, Word 2003, or anything else I’ve tried except Wordpad.
If it helps, I’m running Windows 7 x64.
Currently the tweaker doesn’t focus the closed window, but instead allows it to gain focus.
This works with some programs (e.g. Notepad and Wordpad) but doesn’t work with others (the ones you mentioned).
I don’t think explicitly bringing the window to front is a good approach, as the tweaker cannot know whether a message will be shown. If not, the window will flash before closing with no good reason.
How about this: If the process creates a new window rather than removing one, focus the new window. Should be doable with SetWinEventHook and EVENT_OBJECT_CREATE.
I think a hook is an overkill in this situation.
Ideally, the closed application should focus it’s own window, but apparently it doesn’t expect to be closed while being out of focus.
Such a hook would only be instated prior to firing the terminate command and would be removed immediately after the process terminates or the window is focused.
Another possibility, I guess, would be to simply grab the hWnd before terminating and bring its most recent child window to front if IsWindowVisible() after (x) ms.
You’re absolutely right about what closed applications SHOULD do, but since they don’t, a workaround needs to be implemented — if not via hook, then some other method.
I’ve looked at Word 2003.
Upon closing, it checks whether it’s window is the active window, and if not – calls the FlashWindow function, without even creating the confirmation dialog.
So none of your approaches will work here.
Windows has different approaches to this.
When closing a window from the jump list, it brings it to front. It works fine with confirmation dialogs, but causes flashing if there aren’t any.
When closing a window by middle clicking the thumbnail, it has nearly the same behavior as the tweaker, e.g. Visual Studio doesn’t get focused. On the other hand, it seems to work with Word (with a slight delay, though). Perhaps it uses some hack similar to the ones you proposed.
I’ll look closer at how closing from the thumbnail is implemented.
Yep, explorer uses a hack:
When you close a window by middle clicking the thumbnail, it sets a flag.
When a taskbar button flashes, it checks for that flag – if it’s set, it brings the window to foreground.
That was possibly done just to support Office 2003 – I’m not familiar with other apps that behave in a similar way.
I don’t think it’s worth adding a similar hack to the tweaker. Hopefully newer versions of Office behave properly.
Note that Word 2003 is just one of many, many apps I (and others) use that exhibit this behavior. If you’re only able to implement a fix for the apps that don’t flash, I’m fine with that. It’s a much-needed start, at least, and it’ll cover 99.9% of Windows software.
What are these many many apps?
You listed three, two of them require different approaches for fixing, and I couldn’t reproduce it with Sublime Text 2 (it doesn’t seem to show a notification for unsaved files).
If you come up with more examples, perhaps I’ll try to find a general approach that will work most of the time.
I just tested every single editor I use, and of all of them, only IcoFX worked (I don’t use Notepad or Wordpad). Here are the ones that didn’t: ACDSee Pro (hit Ctrl+E to access the editor), Anolis Resourcer, Corel PaintShop Pro, EventGhost, ISTool, mp3DirectCut, Sound Forge Pro 10, Visual Basic 6, Visual C++ 6, WinAutomation, and Wireshark.
As for Sublime, you’ll apparently need to add “hot_exit”: false and “remember_open_files”: false to your user config.
That’s what I ended up doing. Not very pretty, but I’m not aware of a better solution.
You might want to try it out on your collection before I do a release:

Worked with everything (including Office!) except VB6, where the main window is brought to front, but the child window doesn’t get focus.
This is actually a part of a larger bug.
The function I used to switch to windows didn’t handle cases of nested window, i.e. when the popup window has an owner which is in turn owned by the main window.
You can see that switching to the VB window when the notification is open doesn’t work properly using other methods, too, like scrolling between windows or using Taskbar Inspector.
The bug will be fixed in the next version.

since update 4.2.6. “don’t group” functionality does not work anymore for me (Win7-Pro, 64-bit); after the update an error message came up that a dll is not available but don’t remember it. Any ideas how to solve this?
If you get an error message, then probably no options are working.

I don’t know what locks the dll file. I can’t reproduce the issue, so there’s not much I can do about it.
After updating my computer now freezes randomly. I do not think any other programs were responsible. Windows locks up mouse and capslocks key freeze. Does not respond to pings.
I don’t believe the tweaker update causes these issues.
Did you try to run your computer with the tweaker turned off? Does it solve the issue?
Yes I am now sure it is this program. I used a methodology of running windows in safe mode. Then regular mode with no other programs. Then adding a program waiting 20 minutes, another program wait another 20 minutes… Only when I load 7+ Taskbar Tweaker do I get the behavior I described. (Computer freezes, no cap locks, cannot ping, mouse does not move). There seems to be no trigger, it’s just a random thing after around 20 minutes. Perhaps related to some background process. The last items in my eventlog seems to sometimes be the WMI service perhaps this is unrelated. I’m happy to try to diagnose the problem if you have some suggestion on how to do so.
I’m afraid I can’t do much without a way to reproduce it.
Please tell me what OS are you using (Windows 7/8 32/64 bit), and make a screenshot of the tweaker’s options. Perhaps I’ll be able to reproduce the issue.

I finally found out what is causing the ridiculous unresponsiveness to windows 7 crapBar, but I’m not sure how to solve it though.
When you click on a app in the task bar and you hold the mouse and move it (within that taskbar item)then nothing happens, you can move the mouse with-in the item but nothing will happen, guess its got something todo with that crap pop-up which can’t be properly disabled as win7 keeps re-enabling it even using your cool app.
It appears that the click event only will maximise the application if you click on it and not move the mouse at all. Is there a possible solution to this crap idea that has caused so many pointless clicks that just go’es into the neverworld.
Win7 = the new mac.
Is there a work around to disable this really crap way of doing things.

What do you mean?
I know what the OP probably means, because it’s happening to me too. I made a change with Taskbar Tweaker, telling it to do nothing when the mouse hovers over the taskbar. It worked great. But then I rebooted, and the taskbar went back to the stupid pop-up jump list when I hover the mouse over the taskbar. I cannot seem to get rid of that list no matter what I do.

Misunderstanding happened because I thought “labels” refers to the live previews, while you meant the labels on the buttons in taskbar.

In general, there’s no bug here, it works as designed. I want to see whether it’s possible to add a registry option to always show labels in thumbnail previews.
Below, I’ll refer to the the labels in thumbnails as “titles”, and to the labels of taskbar buttons as “labels”, to avoid confusion…

First, it makes the titles visible for buttons that were set to never show labels.
Second, it adds a registry option (in OptionsEx), “always_show_thumb_labels”, that makes titles always visible.
I know this is a bit outside of your WONDERFUL program but is there anyway you could institute an option that would double rows of the quicklaunch, when those icons are small? If you have large icons for the rest of the taskbar and small icons for the quicklaunch bar, those small icons are half the size of the large ones. But, they still are relegated to a single row. XP had them doubled up.
Thoughts?

That’s how it already works, but two rows of the quicklaunch don’t fit in a single row taskbar, even when large icons are used.
It works with a multirow taskbar, though:
In general, taskbar toolbars are kinda deprecated in Windows 7/8. They exist mainly for compatibility, and don’t integrate that well with the new taskbar.
Two feature requestes for Win7:
I use Windows Classic theme in Windows 7. Unfortunately this theme does not support previews which are only in Aero themes. If you can add previews into taskbar when Classic themes are activated it would be a bombshell.
And one more thing – when my last active window is in particular group and I click on group in taskbar it would be nice if last active window is highlighted in that group.

Great tool. Saved my marriage. My wife hates my after I swapped her old PC with a new one running Windows 8.
I am looking to be able to cycle through the taskbar (in taskbar visually displayed order) via keyboard hotkeys. I want to bind Numpad* to move to the left taskbar item and Numpad- to move to the next taskbar item. Could you possibly support custom hotkeys to cycle back and forward on the taskbar?

First – LOVE your little program! I have introduced it to a number of my co-workers and it makes taking our calls (call center applications) sooooo much simpler!
Only one issue: we use VDI clients so our “computer” is mirrored to the actual hardware every time we log in. We have to run Tweaker from a network share, and we find that the settings that we put use are not saved to the ‘installation’ folder. Is there a tweak of some sort that we can do to accomplish this? Keep in mind that we do not have access to the registry due to profile restrictions.
Have you tried the portable version?
I’ve never thought about launching it from a network drive, but I tried it now and it seems to work.
yes – that is the one that we are using – each time it is opened after the log out any options that were selected the previous session are lost
The options should be saved in an .ini file in the same directory.
Does the file exist?
no .ini file in the network share 🙁

Is the directory writable?
Try opening CMD and running a similar command:

Does the 1.txt file appear?
Interesting – the file did not show up – changing the ‘useful’ folder to no read only files / subfolders (right click, properties, uncheck read only, apply to all subfolders and files)
Drive H is writable by all employees.

1.txt now showing up fine – do I have to quit and restart the tweaker to have the ini show up?
Yes, or toggle one of the options on the main window.
In general, the tweaker should show an error when it fails to save it’s options. I don’t know why it failed silently for you.
Just did the toggle – no ini – did a full quit and restart of the program – it came up with the settings correct but I still have no ini file in the ‘instal’ directory – what is the full name of the ini? i can do a search for it….
The name should be the same as the file name of the tweaker executable (“7+ Taskbar Tweaker” by default).
*sigh* I hate this new system …. I can find every other INI except the 7+ tweaker…. I will keep looking though – it has to be in one of the disposable directories…. somewhere….
Are you sure you’re not using the non-portable version, which writes the data to registry?
Check your “7+ Taskbar Tweaker.exe” file size, it should be about 50 KB for the portable launcher, and about 200 KB for the non-portable version.
AH-HA! yes – mine is 278 – let me redo the install with the portable selected….
OKAY! good to go – ini showing up now so all will be good – just have to add the -hidewnd to hide the main window on start up.

I’m mainly interested in 7+ Taskbar Tweaker for its ability to add seconds to the system clock. Does this still allow auto synchronization as this is very important for my usage?
Out of curiosity, any possibility you might have a utility for adding nothing but seconds? A super-stripped utility like that would be worth even more to me than the full 7+ package.
Yes.
There’s no such utility, but the tweaker is very lightweight, so it shouldn’t be an issue.
Very much appreciate the quick and informative reply. I look forward to testing it in addition to a couple similar utilities for the purpose of adding seconds digits to the Windows clock.

I have experienced the same problem that was reported on 22 Jan.: “every time I start my PC, the settings window opens.”
The proposed solution “You might want to try unchecking and checking again the “Run at startup” option in the settings window” did not work.
Is there another solution?
System: Windows 7-x64, 7+ v4.2.6 PORTABLE(!), “Run at startup” is unchecked and a shortcut to “7+ Taskbar Tweaker.exe” is placed in the Windows “startup” folder for the user.

(I had look in the help file, the FAQ and this blog without finding this switch. If it is not my overlooking the obvious, you might want to include this option/switch in the FAQ or CHM file for other users to find.)
It’s mentioned in the help file (Settings – Run at startup).
The thing is, the portable version is meant to be portable – e.g. to be used from a USB drive.
Extracting the portable version and creating a startup shortcut to it beats the whole purpose of portability. The setup exists for the purpose, setting the tweaker to be run at startup automatically.

It’s a false positive.
It’s not the first time the tweaker is falsely detected by Bitdefender.

I’m getting notification of a “new version”, which is apparently 4.2.6. But I have 4.2.7 installed, and the changelog is showing everything from 4.0.1 to 4.2.6.
I did actually have some trouble installing 4.2.7. When I first tried it, it seemed to hang. I wound up rebooting and trying again, and that time it seemed to work. Now that I’m getting another update notice, does this mean you’ve somehow rolled back or recalled 4.2.7?
I’ve had some troubles with the server, now I’m moving to a new one, that’s why there are some temporary issues.
The latest version is v4.2.7. The changelog should be fixed now, as well as the updater.
