7+ Taskbar Tweaker for Windows 10 May 2019 Update
Another upcoming Windows 10 update, another post. According to Wikipedia, the May 2019 Update is expected to be released at the end of May. As any previous major update, it requires to do adjustments to 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.
I’ve just released the first beta version of the tweaker which adds experimental support for the Windows 10 May 2019 Update. It also adds some features to Windows 10 which were requested multiple times by users. Please let me know if you encounter any issues with the beta version.
Several users also asked me about support for the insider builds of Windows 10 Codename 20H1. I plan to add minimal support for it (see here for details about the meaning of “minimal support”), but probably not before releasing the stable version for the May 2019 Update.
Update (May 6): Turns out the new beta version works for Windows 10 Codename 20H1, too. Tested on build 18890.

Done! I’ve just uploaded version 9.6. Hopefully no more adjustments will be required when the final Windows 10 May 2019 Update is released.
Does that mean the virtual desktop order fix is also functional now?
The
virtual_desktop_order_fixadvanced option works for the latest Windows 10 May 2019 Update build. I’m not sure about Windows 10 Codename 20H1, but in any case I don’t strive for a complete compatibility for 20H1 in such an early stage. I can’t reproduce the issue. If you’re using v5.6.2.3 beta then you should see the modern volume indicator, unless you enabled the
sndvol_classicadvanced option. What’s your configuration?Perhaps you’re using this registry tweak? See my comment here.

I would like to suggest a feature that would make your app even better… When there is a window set fullscreen or top-most on windows and maximized… most of the time the taskbar when set to autohide (to save some space on screen and reduce visual clutter)… the Taskbar refuse to show and this is an issue that dates back to Windows 95 and MS didn’t manage to solve it since then…
My suggestion is to add the WinApi function that set the taskbar to topmost and trigger the unhide if Windows doesn’t do it (also hide would be great to force it when the taskbar is stuck) and make the Stay or Wheel trigger one state or another…
There is a software called Taskbar Activate and it’s the only one that I’ve found that solve this properly but it’s very outdated and his author is dead long time ago unfortunately… I managed to make it work even better and hide the line on the bottom but I just wish if I was a programmer so I will reverse engineer it and make a more modern version… (many photoshop users suffer from this issue since the taskbar when refuse to autohide it block the view of the tray which contains some useful information and it’s frustrating to have to change the taskbar to be always visible because of this and lose some screen space that is needed for softwares’ UI)

would like to request a feature for reverting the volume back to the Windows 7 style. I was able to do this with a registry tweak but it no longer works in 1903.
The registry tweak still works, I just verified it with 1903. But the latest beta version of the tweaker uses the modern volume indicator for its volume scrolling events. I checked, and it doesn’t work well with the Windows registry option to disable the modern indicator. You can use the
sndvol_classicadvanced option of the tweaker to revert to the old behavior.thanks, that worked.
fyi for anyone else looking, advanced options are accessed by right clicking on the taskbar icon.

7+ Taskbar Tweaker has several options that can help you manage lots of windows. Some of them are:
* The Taskbar Inspector. You can launch it from the tweaker’s options window or from the tray icon, by double/middle clicking the taskbar, and by other means (such as a keyboard shortcut) by adjusting it via the advanced options.
* The “Cycle between taskbar buttons” option.

I know that there are issues sometimes for some geographical locations. The proper solution would probably be to switch hosting, but I’m reluctant to do it for now, since it’s time consuming to move it all. As a workaround you can use a web proxy, there are plenty of those, Google for it.
Whats going on? When will you release the update for 1903? Or are you as usual dragging out on things to feed on the donations of inpatient people?

Noticing that tray_icons_padding has some unusual effects now. Setting it to “1” used to make the padding tight and perfect, but now the icons run together. I tried other values and found that larger values have more padding, and setting it to “8” seemed to look a lot like the previous version. However, if you lock your computer and unlock it, it looks weird again. Screenshots below.

Thanks for the feedback. The issue was already reported on UserEcho. I’ll look at it once I’m near my development computer. Hopefully I’ll be able to fix it, otherwise I’m afraid I’ll have to revert to the previous implementation which didn’t support tight padding.
Should be fixed in v5.6.2.4 beta. Please try it for a while, and let me know if the issue comes back.

I’m beta-testing version 5.6.2.3 on Win 1903, and I’m noticing that the Search window will always remain open even after clicking outside of it or some search result. I have to press the Escape key in order to close it.
As soon as 7TT is closed, the search window can be closed normally.

I tried, but wasn’t able to reproduce the issue. Can you reproduce it consistently, or was it a one time issue? Do you still have the issue if you turn off all of the tweaker’s settings? If not, can you enable them one by one and see which option causes the issue? Thanks.

and I just test the beta version in my another 20H1 computer (18908), it works. It seems that this beta version is not supported from 18908.

Based on the info you provided, I can guess what happened. Please make sure that you’ve inserted the correct access code. If you’ve donated, check your email once again. Remember that guessing the code won’t work.

I’m having the same issue with 5.6.2.4 on 18917!
AVG is giving me the IDP.generic (ID Protection – Behavior Shield) on 7+ (5.7.0.0 6/29/19) after its latest self update.
I’m pretty sure this is a false positive from a heuristics engine in AVG, but I’d feel better hearing from others that they’ve seen the same and enabled an exception for 7+ with no ill effects.
Recently updated. SMADAV recognizes it as a user virus, not sure if there is anything you can do, but I had to disable SMADAV as I’ve been using this tweaker for so long, I can’t live without it.

It would be great if there was an option to launch a manually selected program by taskbar double and middle clicks.
There’s a way to do it. It’s not the most intuitive one, but it’s possible. See my answer here in this topic.
I have the latest beta running on W10 Pro 1903 but unfortunately the taskbar reverts back to the wider (window standard size) every time I reboot. I’m looking in to a way to have make it a slim one. Many thanks in advance!
You need to have the tweaker to run at startup. If it does, it makes the taskbar narrow every time it launches. Otherwise Windows reverts it to the default minimal width.
Hi there, and thank you for your reply. I have it running with the Startup. I forgot to mention that I’d like the taskbar to placed on the right side of my right monitor. (I have a 3 monitor setup). However, if I place it there it doesn’t stay narrow it reverts back to the Windows minimal width. Any ideas?

Hmm, the width is correct. Basically, here’s how the option is supposed to work:
* You enable the
no_width_limitadvanced options.* You resize the taskbar to be narrow.
* The tweaker saves the width in the registry in this branch:

* The

Everything looks correct – the value in the registry is 38, and so is the width of the taskbar on the screenshot. So the tweaker is supposed to resize the taskbar once it’s launched.
Try the following:
* Resize the taskbar to 38 pixels.
* Exit the tweaker.
* Enlarge the taskbar and then shrink it as much as you can. You should end up with a 62 pixels wide taskbar.
* Run the tweaker again.
The tweaker is supposed to resize the taskbar when it launches. If that doesn’t work, then I’m afraid I’m out of ideas. In this case I can send you a debug build of the tweaker and we can try to see why it doesn’t resize on your computer.
Ah! I think you may have missed my original post. I am actually trying to do on one of my secondary monitors. I have a 3 monitor setup with the main one being in the middle. So I am actually trying to have the thin task bar on my right monitor on the right hand side.

Secondary taskbars are supported, but I haven’t tested a setup with more than one. Your screenshots show the main taskbar (I can see from the notification area), so I focused on that.
If the problem is with a taskbar different than the one on the screenshots, that’s another story 🙂 did you resize the secondary taskbar? The
last_secondary_taskbar_widthentry should be created in the registry.No no. I am using only 1 taskbar on my 3 monitor setup (Left – Main – Right) but I’d like it to be on the right monitor. It still resets back when I reboot though.
Does it matter that monitor LEFT and RIGHT are different size (smaller) than the MAIN monitor ?
Since you have only one taskbar, it shouldn’t matter how many monitors you have, and which of them has the taskbar, etc.
Let’s get back to this comment of mine:
Try to do that, and report whether it works, i.e. whether the taskbar shrinks after the tweaker is launched. If not, try to do the same with the taskbar unlocked. And if possible, try to do that with the external monitors detached.

OK, let’s try the debug build approach:
* Download DebugView.
* Download this test build of 7+ Taskbar Tweaker and install it.
* Exit the tweaker if it’s running.

* Run the tweaker.
* Look at DebugView, you should see debug logs. Paste them here.

First of all, that’s a false positive detection. False positives are unfortunately common for beta versions of 7+ Taskbar Tweaker which are not popular enough. Please see the FAQ here and this blog post.
Also, the version that you linked, 5.6.2.3, is more than 3 months old and is not relevant anymore.
Hi, I’ve been using Taskbar Tweaker for YEARS and I love it. So first off, THANK YOU for writing such a great program. 🙂
A few months ago, I noticed that every time it tried to run, I would get an error. I see your post about the May update to W10. I honestly don’t remember when it started having problems, but it could well be associated with that.
Anyway, per your suggestion, I downloaded the beta version. I uninstalled the original version and d/l beta. Upon install, I got an error message: Error opening file for writing, then it showed the path where it was trying to install. I had the option to abort, retry or ignore. Tried aborting and retrying, no dice. Retry did nothing, so I hit ignore. When it finished the install, I got an incompatibility warning, that an unsupported build of Windows 10 was detected, and that proceeding would lead to unexpected results. I proceeded anyway, and got the “could not load library” error that I see someone else got. I OK’ed out of it and got a popup saying an updated versions of Tweaker is available (strange, since I d/l the most current version from your website today), but when I hit update, it errored out.
So… now you know what I know. LOL I’m not a programmer and don’t really know what else I can tell you to help figure out the issue, but I really, really miss being able to move my programs around on my taskbar.
Anything you can recommend to fix the problem would be hugely appreciated.

What’s the path that you’re trying to install to? The default path should be writable to non-admin users, but if you chose a custom path when originally installing the tweaker (for example the Program Files folder), you might need to run the installer as administrator.
What’s the exact error message? You should see a number along with the text.
If you don’t mind resetting your settings, you can uninstall the tweaker and check the “Remove the tweaker’s settings” checkbox, then install it again. This should solve any issues you have, unless the issue is with your system.
Well… I tried something different. I had been uninstalling through the app. Instead, I went into program manager today and uninstalled that way. It was odd that it was even there, since I’d uninstalled the day I posted this originally.
Anyway, upon doing a complete uninstall and reinstall – yet again! – it appears to be working. YAY!!!

Thank you very much for 7+ Taskbar Tweaker. I’ve used it a lot under Windows 7 Professional. Some days ago I’ve upgraded my Windows 7 Professional installation to Windows 10 Professional (1803). I and other users don’t like the highlighted line under the taskbar icons to running programs in Windows 10. For example see “How to get rid of the line under the taskbar icons ?”

Just a heads up – After installing KB4517211 for Windows 10 version 1903, 7+ Taskbar Tweaker no longer works. I got the old Could not load library message after the reboot.
Uninstalled the update returns 7TT to normal operation.

I’m using the current version, v5.7, of 7+ Taskbar Tweaker on two Windows 10 Pro computers, one a custom-built desktop with a Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UDH3 motherboard and the other a Dell XPS 13-9360 laptop. Everything worked great until earlier today when I downloaded and installed the 2019-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1903 for x64-based Systems (KB4517211). Now, on both computers, when I try to run 7+ Taskbar Tweaker v5.7, I get an error dialog box with the following message: “7+ Taskbar Tweaker: Could not load library (1004)”. I love this little app and am very sad it’s no longer working. Please help!
That’s a known issue. Please try the latest beta version, 5.7.0.6, it should solve the incompatibility.

I downloaded the Version 5.8.0.0. If my users open the application without admin rights, they can not safe their settings. We get an error “An error occurred while saving the configuration.”
Is there any way for non admin users to save the config?
We did not have this problem with Windows 10 1803 and TaskbarTweaker 5.6.2.0

There shouldn’t be any difference regarding settings between version 5.6 and 5.8.
Is the installation portable? Was it installed for every user, or are all users sharing a single installation of the tweaker (if that’s the former, it can indeed cause issues)?

Well, the portable version stores the configuration in the program’s folder. The Program Files folder is not writable by programs running as non-admin, hence the failure. Anyway, I’m glad you sorted it out.
Found a small “feature”.
On one of my machines, sometimes the tweaker loads before the taskbar has actually appeared. It pops up a message to complain, and then remains running in the SysTray.
Cue confusion when I try to start the tweaker again the settings dialogue appears, but it still doesn’t work, until I remember to manually quit the tweaker and restart it.
Could you make it terminate after getting this error message, or even better could you make it wait until the taskbar appears, timing out after a short while and then giving an error and terminating?

What does the message say?
That’s what should happen. The tweaker is run by explorer, and then waits for explorer’s initialization before looking for a taskbar. That is unless you’re using a non-standard setup, such as configuring the tweaker to run with a scheduler task instead of the standard autorun mechanism.
Yes I’m running it with a scheduled task. Originally because I had one machine where I couldn’t use the run key for weird reasons, but also because the program starts faster, which is handy when you’re using no_width_limit because you get the correct taskbar size earlier in the boot sequence, with the downside of occasionally it starts too fast and fails.
I’ve gone with an autohotkey script from the scheduled task as a workaround, which is a bit slower than starting it directly, but never fails:
SysGet, Primary, MonitorPrimary

SysGet, WorkArea, MonitorWorkArea, %Primary%

I realise that my setup is a niche use case and not a priority, but it’s a “nice to have”, if 7TT could handle this itself at the point it’s ready to inject the DLL.

Now when I think of it writing this comment, it’s pretty safe to just remove the error message altogether. If there’s no taskbar, the user probably knows that. I’ll do that in the next update.
Just gave it a test. Removed my script to wait for the taskbar to appear and called 7TT directly from an “on logon” scheduled task.
It works perfectly. When I log in, I don’t even see the taskbar appear at full width and then shrink any more, it just logs in straight to the narrow taskbar.
This is especially useful on my work machine, as I have to use an auto-starting piece of software that sizes itself based on the available screen space when it starts and then never lets you change it, which was annoying when it started first!

I’m getting the “Taskbar not found” error, even though it’s clearly loaded correctly and shrunk the taskbar down to the narrow width.
Not a huge issue, just click OK and it goes away. Is it worth getting rid of the error message?
What happens is that the tweaker is launched before the taskbar appears and shows the error message, but once the taskbar appears it detects it and activates. What I meant in the last paragraph of my previous comment (“I’ll do that in the next update.”) is that I’m going to remove that message. Let me know if you get this message often, and I’ll release a new beta version with this change sooner.

Didn’t get it at all until I installed the 2004 update a few days ago.
You can install the latest beta version which was just released. It shouldn’t display the error message in case there’s no taskbar yet.

You can use the “-hidewnd” command line option. It should be added automatically if you choose to start the tweaker on startup when installing. Perhaps you configured it manually.

When will the Windows 2020 Update be available?
On my latest Windows 10 the program shuts randomly itself down. Usually it only lasts about 5 min, it never runs longer than about 15 min.
What can I do? Any chance to fix it? I like it…
One possible reason might be a security software, such as an antivirus, that kills the tweaker. Please try adding the tweaker to the exclusions list of your security program.

Thanks RaMMicHaeL. I’m using the Defender for the security. As you recommended I added the Program Files 7+ Taskbar Tweaker folder as well as the 7+ Taskbar Tweaker.exe file in the exclusions – but it did not help.
So far I did not have time to analyze why is the process being killed, but I had another solution: I created a task schedule which runs the program every 3 minutes and it works OK. At least for now, perhaps some future version will work for me as it should…
